Its sad... I was cheering for the Chiefs to pull off the sweep, and knock the Broncos back into the wild card race..... If the Chiefs won yesterday, this week would be a playoff clinching week (yea before thanksgiving) lol.

But, as the traditions hold. I popped a bottle of pink sparkling wine with my wine upon the conclusion.... yea, I didnt drink any, I was working on my home brews, but it is one of the only traditions to be proud of being a Dolphins fan the last decade

Don Shula made a deal with the devil just prior to the 1972 season.

no, most of our grandparents weren't even around for that win.

instead we either have our hopes crushed before the ASG, or shortly there after. When the Cubs do make the playoffs, we get excited, and then heart broken with the usual first round exit.

I'm confused by this thread. Did something happen in 1972?

Sure that is your opinion, however I will continue to celebrate the time Marino was on the Phins and the excellent play of Zach and JT and others.

Yeah they didn't win a ring, which is unfortunate, but they brought excitement to the club. I just don't like remembering Jay Fiedler, AJ Feely, Cleo Lemon, Pennington, Pat White for a few plays, Trent Green, Tyler Thigpen.....ugh....

I think you can definitely celebrate the time of Marino with the team.....

Buffalo celebrates the Jim Kelly Era! I mean he didnt win anything! Are we really any better than them? The 1972 team spoiled us fans, and half of the Dolphins fans out there weren't even born to see it (my self being one of them)Our glory days are so long past that yes we can definitely celebrate the memory of Dan Marino giving us consistent 10 win seasons as an expect outcome

They won Four AFC Championships.

Not counting his rookie ( where he did not start all yr ) & '94 season ( Injured ) Marino had six out of 15 ten win season. Only once winning ten in back to back yrs. '84 & '85.

Seems a lot better than it actually was.

To me its like 2 yrs ago when they started 0-7. Any win after that was pointless. Winning to me only is important when the games mean something.

Wanny running RW at the end of '03 when he had a busted shoulder knowing Miami was out of the playoffs, but he wanted to be able to say "Hey, we won 10 games & still missed the playoff" It was a pointless victory, but it cost him his job the next yr & sent Miami spiraling downward.

The Marino years were special.

Anyone who thinks otherwise didn't live through them or failed to appreciate the talent he had.

It hurts like hell he never had the right surrounding cast, but I wouldn't trade his time in Miami for anything.

So, you have no appreciation for having HOF on your team for 17 years?

Honest question: why are you even a fan? If championships are all that matter, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment every year. Even if you were a Steelers fan, you'd still be upset 7/8 years.

Nope. Championship are why they play.

Why am I a fan? Because I'm a fan. They do not have to win every year, but it would be more special if they won something in the last 40 Yrs.

Championship are why they play the game. That is lost on some.

Again, one SB victory in the Marino yrs, make his yrs special. Outside that, he was just a QB who threw a nice ball. Watching Miami lose 55-48 does not make his time special.
I have more appreciation for Bob Griese than Marino. Griese won SBs, Marino did not. IMO Griese is the greatest QB in Miami history.

I think everyone here appreciates Marino. As someone who was fortunate enough to be able to out to the stadium & see him play in person it was very special. But there is no doubt that Super Bowl wins are the ultimate goal. Marino has said that himself & expressed his own disappointments regarding that. Even as a fan I have no problem with peoples opinion that without a ring it does not mean a thing. Its just the nature of the beast & if we were fans of another team we would always bring that up about his career. Just like somewhere in out guts we are happy that during a 4 year stretch of being in consecutive super bowls the Bills lost all of them.

When Marino retired he had more wins than any other qb.Celebrating the undefeated season is and will always be special as long as we stay the only team to do it.

It's the best one!

Let me start off with a simple question: What year did you become a Dolphins fan?

As for me, I went to my first game in '87 and I have been a Dolphins fan ever since.

Dphins4me wrote:
Why am I a fan? Because I'm a fan.

That's not really an answer.

Dolphins haven't won in over 40 years. Based on your responses, none of those last 40 seasons had any meaning, and you could not take any sort of appreciation for any of them. Then why in the world are you watching still? Give it up and do something else with you time.

What is it about football that makes you want to have it consume a healthy (or unhealthy lol) portion of your free time?

Dphins4me wrote:

No one ever said they play the game for something other than championships.
The point is that there is more to the experience of being a fan than just the Lombardi trophy.

They made it to the SB in the '84 season.. Other than that, no real meaning, other than watching the underachieve.

I enjoy rooting for them.

We do not agree on this. Games are played to win, not enjoy the ride.

[/quote] 2 Super Bowl wins. Sure Marino was the better passer, but Griese was the better QB, there is more to playing Qb than just throwing a football.

If being able to throw a football was all that is required to be a great QB then Jamarcus Russell would be in the NFL today. Jeff George would be a HOFer.

You said you enjoy rooting for them.

On the other hand you dismiss anything except SB victories.

That means you get some level of enjoyment still, even if, they are not winning championships, despite your claims.

If football was just about championships for you, you wouldn't be watching this season or bothering to post here for the rest of the year.

It goes to the point that football, the experience of being a fan, following a team, rooting for players, has value- despite the outcome.

Griese was a caretaker QB. He threw 7 passes in SB 8, wasn't even needed to go 14-0 in 1972, and needed a historic defense and a dominating running back to get his victories. Miami's D gave up 3 points in their two SB victories COMBINED (plus 7 via special teams). A hundred QBs could have won those games.

PS: Griese won exactly 0 playoff games after SB 8.

I still watch because I'm a fan & I've paid for the NFL Ticket. That does not mean I do not feel its a waste. I have no issues with rebuilding & watching the rebuilding.

However, without reaching the pinnacle its all a waste.

I do not expect a SB victory every yr. In fact I've not believe they have fielded a team that can reach the SB since '94.

Yes, I have & am still wasting my time on this team.

NFL football was not the same game you grew up with. You dog an era you never were able to watch. You are trying to compare 90's watered down version to when the more original version. QBs since the mid 80's have had the luxury of being more protected & knowing defenders could not touch Wrs. Back in the 70's a DB could just about do anything to a WR. Passing was not easy.

He is in the HOF & you do not make the HOF being a caretaker.

Says the person who was not even born when it happened.

1984phins wrote:

Miami went 10-4 twice without making the playoffs. He played in a time when where good teams did not make the playoffs. Division winner & one WC. 4 teams made the playoffs. Not 6. 7-7 did not win a division like 8-8 does today.

Griese won exactly 0 playoff games after SB 8? Funny comment. Went to three consecutive SB, winning two & you are dogging him for what happened afterwards.

Marino is 0-1 in Super Bowls. 1-2 in AFC Championship games. Losing both on his home field. 62-7 playoff loss. 8-10 in playoff games over his career and you want me to believe he was the better QB? Better at throwing, but not a better overall QB. Again it takes more than throwing to be a Qb.

Two different era's of football. Throwing the ball then meant you were weak. Both of you speak of an era I know one of you never grew up watching & understanding the game then.

Every QB since the mid 80's that have all these great stats and whine anytime they get touched, would be on the sidelines getting their panties changed back then. There was not roughing the passer for touching his helmet, legs etc... Frankly I'm not sure they even had that penalty in the '70's.
