Post Dolphins could release Wheeler
a great late Christmas present to Dolphins' fans.

Quote:
The Miami Herald hints there's a chance the Dolphins could release WLB Philip Wheeler.
Signed to a five-year, $26 million contract that included $13 million guaranteed last March, Wheeler was horrific in his first season with the Dolphins. Pro Football Focus credited him with a whopping 18 missed tackles and graded Wheeler out as its worst 4-3 outside linebacker. If Miami does release Wheeler, it'd likely do it as a post-June 1 cut. Jelani Jenkins could be asked to fill in at weak-side 'backer in 2014. The signings of Wheeler and MLB Dannell Ellerbe are parts of the reason GM Jeff Ireland's job status is in question.

Evaluating the players is one reason why this team needs to boot out the coaching staff. I'd hate to let Wheeler go and he has the outstanding season that he had in 2012.

18 missed tackles??? wow!
I liked Jenkins at Florida anyway. Let that kid play!

Hire Wade Phillips, move us back to a 3-4 defense. Insert Jordan the former #3 pick.....

Although some coaches argue with the concept of whether you run a 4-3 or a 3-4 as about 70 percent of games are played in nickel and dime defense because of the type of league it is."

This quote was according to new Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien who used to serve as one of Bill Belicheck's top offensive assistants.

This is a pass happy league.

And hire Scott Pioli as GM, and let him make the decision on whether to keep Philben or not.

Ross is taking too long. Other teams are already making moves.

I suppose there is this remote chance that while we are sitting here wondering that Ross took his helicopter someone else to talk with other options.

Bill Cowher said it best today on the pregame show, we have NO IDEA what is really happening behind closed doors and that is such a true statement. All we can do is speculate.

Ireland won't let him go. He's not willing to accept a mistake so soon.

Seems like there would be connection........Ross - Peterson - Pioli..........Pioli has a very solid record in player evaluations............not so good with coaches.........which eventually led to his departure in KC. I wonder if Ross is using Peterson to gauge Pioli's thoughts before making a decision.........I doubt an in demand GM like Pioli would keep any of the coaches, with the exception of Rizzi.

I believe that releasing Wheeler would be a dumb move on the part of the front office. Though Wheeler absolutely blew starting at WLB, cutting him and having him on the roster makes no difference in cap savings. So what they should do is KEEP Wheeler but as Dion Jordan's backup at SOLB. That's right. Go ahead and sign a better ILB to pit with Misi and Ellerbe and move Wheeler to pass rushing OLB which is what he really is. Then u cut him in 2015.

In this scenario, Miami switches to the 3-4 and move Wake to WOLB. Then by re-signing both Soliai and Starks you return the run stuffing front line of Orrick opposite Wake by having Wake at WOLB, Starks at RE, Soliai at NT, Odrick at LE, and Jordan at SOLB opposite Wake. This will pit Misi and Ellerbe in the inside. It also blesses our depth by having Jenkins and whoever we sign or draft backing them up as well as Vernon backing up Wake at WOLB and Wheeler backing up Jordan at SOLB.

Cutting Wheeler does nothing but create a hole behind Jordan. Unless they consider Josh Kaddu as a good enough backup for Jordan.

Seems like a lot of guaranteed money to throw away after only one season.

Since you can split up dead money over 2 years, cap wise he'd cost about the same whether he got cut this year or next year.

The only difference is whether he's on the roster or not in 2014.

If we are paying no matter what, then we should keep him and bring in some competition.

Yep. Exactly my point as well. If cutting him costs us just the same, we may as well keep him for depth as an OLB rusher behind Jordan, should Jordan go down to injury.

He would cost more to cut than to keep capwise. I doubt he gets cut.

I dont think he gets cut either. I think they should take a SERIOUS look at how he was used in Oak (his best year) and play to his strengths.

Because you guys are right, if we cut him, he goes somewhere else and plays great....we look stupid again (ex Dansby....who will be a free agent again)

He had 1 good year in Oaklan and I highly doubt they will cater the defense to him.

Maybe they should try. He lead our team in tackles . . . Oh my goodness. Where would we of been w/o him?

Not cater or center the D around him. Just get the most out of his physical talents. I didnt see him play in Oak but his stat line is close to what he did in Mia minus the sacks. So if he is a blitzer we should blitz him more often. We already have seen what he does in space in our scheme. Thats where coaching adjustments come in.

Its like Mike Wallace. We KNEW he dropped passes in Pitts but he was still highly effective there. We bring him to Miami and he is not that good? No, just in our scheme he wasnt that effective. I wont say he wasnt used properly but we just didnt put him in the best positions all the time to be effective for us.

What I found telling was how often you looked at the Dolphins Defense and both Ellerbe and Wheeler were confused about where they should be. Additionally, they were always out of position and hustling to try and get into position. Preseason stuff all through the year.
