Post Reports: Fins GM Vacancy is "very coveted" around the league
This is one of the obvious reasons as to why:

Year Total Liabilities Salary Cap Cap Room
2014 $106,413,059 $144,415,847 $38,002,788
2015 $86,812,329 $126,095,000 $39,282,671
2016 $76,805,274 $127,986,000 $51,180,726
2017 $47,938,000 $130,546,000 $82,608,000

http://overthecap.com/calculator/?Team=Dolphins

Can anyone disagree that we have all the pieces in places as well? Outside of the offensive line, and giving this linebacking core one more year? It's obvious that the coaching had pulled this squad back, this roster has talent. I truly believe Tannehill is another reason why aspiring GMs will be jumping all over this opportunity.

I agree it could be a very good position for a new GM. There is cap room, some talented pieces in place, and probably the power to completely hit the reset button after 2014.

IF the new GM has to accept Aponte/Philbin I would hope it is only on a one year trial. If it works, great.

At least for this year he wouldn't have to find a QB. If Tannehill works out, great. If not, it will probably be bad enough that there will be option in the 2015 draft (1st Rd) to target.

The only major overhaul for this year is OL. Doable, but not easy. Kind of stuck with the LBs but the option is there to stay 43 or switch to 34 so perhaps he'll have the power to pick a new DC.

This is what I'm hoping for.

Well if the luring feature is our cap management then whats the issue?

Quote:
Aponte works closely with General Manager Jeff Ireland and Head Coach Joe Philbin on football administrative matters and serves as the team's chief contract negotiator. She is responsible for the management and strategic planning of the Dolphins salary cap, negotiating and drafting player contracts and overseeing the football operations budgets. Aponte also serves as the team's liaison on league affairs.

So it is a "coveted" job due to the cap management, yet nobody will want to work for Aponte

:headscratch

Sorry, I'm just not brimming with confidence. While I think the offense is on the right track with talent and personnel, the only guy out of the back 7 worth his salt is Grimes. Jones...maybe. Patterson - too injury prone. Clemons - a marginal safety. Carroll - average CB. Wheeler - sux. Ellerbe - average. Misi - average.

I'm really not sure why Coyle wasn't let go on day 1. You have two games to close out the season where the recipe should've been blitz and cover the short pass. ... he did neither. His LB's were always confused and his safeties were always deep. His blitzes were vanilla. How do you have confidence in that.

Wow. I like the numbers. We have some room to grow. Sure hope the right GM can make the most of it

I will say this, Salguero is doing his best to paint Aponte as power hungry. His blog today tears her a new one.

Not sure what to completely believe, but I will say that my preference is the clean sweep. Let Aponte go after the juicy gig at the league office. Bring in a new talent evaluator who feels comfortable with his own team.

I'm not all that certain Coyle is safe. If a new GM says its time to bring in a guy who can maximize the current pieces in a different system then why not go that route?

Salguerros' shtick is negative press. He is a dirt bag, hard to believe people still invest time in reading the sewage he spews.

This is what I'm hoping for.

I'm thinking that Aponte (or someone else) as VP of Football Operations (or whatever they'll call it) is a set deal that any GM we hire will have to deal with. It appears that Ross wants a czar-type figure at the top who will run the team. He seems pretty set on having someone that everyone will report to that isn't Ross (which is probably not a bad thing).

I don't think that whoever the new GM will be will be hamstrung with Philbin, not even for one year. Ross may like Philbin and may not want to fire him, but I doubt he'll exclude GM candidates he might want because of Philbin.

What would make this drama very interesting is if a new GM that Ross likes says a new coach is needed and Aponte is put in the position to either back up Philbin or save her job. That would be a true test of her loyalty.

I'm thinking this could happen, but is remote. If it's Aponte that will get that czar job, she'll have a huge hand in selecting the new GM. I don't really envision a situation in which Ross starts off with forcing his brand new czar in to a bad spot. It seems that Ross and Aponte like Philbin and don't want to fire him, but that if it's a choice between getting the GM they want and keeping Philbin, I'd say he's as good as out the door.

They have a lot of cap room because of the number of Dolphins players becoming free agents.

There isn't going to be much better talent available in free agency than what may potentially leave Miami.

Doesn't a "football czar" have to be qualified to actually be knowledgeable about football? I mean, if you want to be successful and all...I'd venture to guess there is more to it then crunching cap numbers together.

I think it would be fair to suggest that if this team resigned Bush (if actually utilized correctly) and Fasano, this team may be in the playoffs. I'm tired of free agency, I want to see rookies may consistent impact plays.

Maybe.

Does Jeff Bezos know anything about shipping and logistics or writing complex code for on-demand video? Or did he hire the best guys he could find to run shipping and Video stuff at Amazon?

I'd also argue that Aponte being someone who only does math is probably a bit misleading.

I agree with the basic premise, but your examples, two guys we didn't draft, aren't that well thought out.

I would not touch the situation in Miami's front office. No way would I even consider working for that org if I already was in the NFL circle.

Wasn't it Aponte that told Tanne he could go back in the draft if he didn't like the language in his contract?

Ireland did a pretty good job of clearing cap room for the next couple years..Unfortunatly i think it was at the cost of not making the playoffs this year. We will see what it does for future years though.

Aponte is a cap specialist, not Ireland, he was/is a talent guy plain and simple.. If you like our cap, thank her not him...

And then theres this:
:haha

Quote:
You 300-section types, who think gold was struck with last weekend's drafting of USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.

You have one person to thank for your good fortune:

And it's not Rex Ryan.

Instead, give a nod to former Notre Dame Academy second baseman Dawn Aponte from down the block.........

"Capwoman," Sports Illustrated's Peter King called Aponte after the complicated deal was done, completely shocking non-participants.

And if this Sanchez thing works out for the Jets, all you fans will have Dawn Aponte to thank.

I just cant hate her now, no chance....
