Post Dolphins CEO: Philbin will remain coach regardless of GM hir
In case anyone had any ideas that the next GM decides Philben's fate.

NFL.COM's Kevin Patra wrote:
Dolphins CEO: Joe Philbin is our head coach

When the Miami Dolphins parted ways with general manager Jeff Ireland on Tuesday, the questions turned to coach Joe Philbins future with the franchise.

The belief that owner Stephen Ross would keep his coach for at least the next season, regardless of who was hired as GM, was bolstered Wednesday by CEO Tom Garfinkel.

"Steve has a lot of confidence in Joe. Joe's our head coach -- a lot of confidence in Joe Philbin," Garfinkel responded when asked if the new GM would be able to select his or her own coach, per The Palm Beach Post.

Garfinkel said the Dolphins plan to "move fast" in selecting their next general manager. The team will release a list of candidates and plan to start conducting interviews Friday.

The main goal of the Dolphins' search is to find a strong talent evaluator.

"In my conversations with (Ross, we're looking for) someone with a proven track record of evaluating talent -- a football person," said Garfinkel, per the Miami Herald. "That's going to be the first criteria. Someone with a lot of intellect. A collaborative team player. Someone who’s creative and open-minded."

Dawn Aponte, vice president of football administration, is currently in charge of the organizational duties. Given the criteria Garfinkel set forth, it would not be a stretch to see the well-respected Aponte gain more prominence in the organization while the team brings someone in who has a scouting background to supplement her strengths.

Sooooo what "quality" GM would want to come here with being told this is your coach?

Didn't they say that about Sparano right before Ross was caught by the press getting on a plane to SF?

There are plenty of GMs who like Philbin, and like the position Miami is in. If Washington can find a coach with Snyder as stingy as he is about what the coach has control over and doesn't, Miami can easily find someone to fill this role. Whether I think Jay Gruden can prove himself is a different story, but I can't say he won't because he hasn't had the opportunity.

I know they are completely different situations, Miami and Washington, but I believe there is a list of capable GMs that would love to land the job.

Who are these plenty of GMs? And how many of them are quality GMs?

The GM should find the best talent. The coach should mold that talent into an impact NFL player. The capologist should make sure that player's contract doesn't bankrupt the team. It really shouldn't be that hard. Can the coach have some input? Sure. Can the capologist give feedback about contract negotiations and maybe advise to move on to plan B? Of course.

What the bleep is going on there?

You have a cancer in the front office stoking fires and making power plays.

I'd like to be considered...........my first objective will be to combine the DNA of Dan Marino and Michael Vick to create the ultimate Quarterback.

I don't think that says Philbin will be the coach regardless of who is selected as GM. I think it says the owner likes the coach. That's all.

So are you hoping this is like Jeff Ireland saying, "well right now Chad Henne is our quarterback" when he was seeking out other options?

If the game they want to play is Aponte gets power but can't scout talent, and Philbin get his last chance to prove it, then why not just promote Gaine to assist Aponte? Why conduct the charade of a GM search when it clearly is a glorified scouting position?

Gaine is highly regarded in NFL circles.

Watch them overlook him and he get a GM job elsewhere and be successful.

That is what it would take. A GM who wants Philbin as his coach, then Philbin should be safe for more than one yr. I hate it when owners ( Miami basically ) say. Ok coach. You have sucked, but I'm going to give you one more yr. One more yr breeds desperation. Desperation leads to trades for players that might help them save their neck.

Either you believe in the coach or you do. If you believe in the coach, then you do not force him to fire than coordinators.

Who knows what the media doesn't know. I'm sure there are some that are interested just haven't publicly stated it. You asked the most important question though, which ones are quality GM's. The OC spot makes me wonder, too.

Not that I see him in Miami, wonder what the chances of Mack Brown coaching in the NFL are.
