Post Confusion over Phins GM process
Quote:

“I want to talk to the Dolphins,” Wooten said. “I talked to Jeff Pash from the NFL. I didn’t quite understand what they were saying about how everything is going to work.” There are still a ton of questions over whether owner Stephen Ross plans to install a GM with full control or if that person will answer to someone who runs operations? ... Apparently the Dolphins are having trouble explaining this to potential candidates, at least by phone. Ross might not even know yet how it will be structured.

Who would accept a job without a proper job description and properly identified chain of command?

If the job is worth millions of guaranteed dollars? Me.

Please, no offense, but I think that says a lot about what type of candidates we are attracting.

If Miami wants to attract a smart, solid GM, then they will not BS around and not give that individual control.

This sounds like Ross is trying to protect Aponte, and that concerns me.

Stephen Ross released a statement about the general manager search that begins on Friday.

"The new General Manager will have autonomous responsibility for the 53 man roster and selecting players during the draft and will report to me....

Previously you read that John Wooten had issues with the clarity of the Dolphins GM job. This statement has changed his mind.

"Everything is fine," he said. "Everything is great. No problem."

He is now encouraging minority candidates to interview.

Sounds like Ross is in the "acquiring assets for specific purposes" business.

I don't have a problem with him saying Aponte controls the purse, Philbin controls player development (well, okay I have a problem with that) and (insert GM) controls scouting and player selection.

But doing this creates finger pointing when things go wrong, as we just witnessed. At least when one person is given control you know where the blame should be placed.

It is troubling how Aponte seems to have authority with zero resume on player evaluation. Of course by saying that I should now be labeled a mysoginist or sexist, and that complicates this whole thing because we're allowed to tear Ireland and Philbin new ones but any questioning of Aponte and we're immediately called bigots.

Aponte is watching is wallet and has put this team in a good position with the cap. I think she has found a place in his heart.

I don't mind that Aponte and the GM will be equal (I am assuming this because Ross said the new GM position is the same as before), as long as they can "work together for the common good". What I do not like is that the GM is not over the coach.

I guess what is killing me is this team was average this year because of the coaching. We have fired one incompetent OC and kept the other two stooges. Ireland was a mixed bag but if I ranked him, he would've been above Huey, Duey and Lewie.

Not here, twitter comments. Some of the writers trying to be prematurely PC.

There are definitely morons stereotyping her, but, for example, I disagree with an O Kelly comment that a lot of the firestorm over Aponte is because she is a woman in the NFL. I think a lot of us are just trying to figure out who she is and why Ross values her so highly. We're getting stories of this internal war between her and Ireland, and it is really concerning in my opinion. Was he the cause or was she?

I don't care that she is a woman.

I just care that she is playing the office politics game to get a leg up.

Thinking outside the box here. What are the chances their is some extra curricular activity going on there?

Exactly. But some (again not here) parties feel that anyone who criticizes or questions is doing so on the basis that she is a woman in a man's profession and that is the driving force behind our suspicions.

Honestly, you could insert Brian Gaine into the story instead of Aponte and we'd all be saying he's a little weasel using dirty politics to save his arse.

Sounds to me like Ireland wanted control, Aponte wanted more power, neither felt the other should have elevated status, and the war began. Aponte wisely allied herself with Ross's bosom buddy (Philbin) and the rest is history.

I don't mind the structure Ross has, I just worry about the finger pointing and flame throwing that occurs in the aftermath of disappointment.

I'm so unimpressed that I am already hoping they they get the next rebuild right 5 years from now.
