CBS Sports NFL Insider

... already there has been chatter among candidates from more established front offices about the exact nature of the job, the nuances of the search itself, and whether or not this is a situation worth further exploring. And, several sources close to this situation believe that in the end, Cleveland personnel exec Ray Farmer will be offered the job, and he has strong support from Dolphins consultant Carl Peterson, who is spearheading the search.

How comfortable would you feel going into a situation where the owner has his favorites, who we now know clashed with the previous GM and said it was his fault? If the team falls flat next year does Philbin still get a pass and the roster is purged and remade in his image?

The only pass I will give Philbin is if he pleaded with Ireland to get him a LT and RB, and Ireland told him he'll be fine with Martin and Miller. As fans we of course sit back and say the young guys will be fine, but we are not talent evaluators nor are we watching every practice.

The national media still wants to dump on the Dolphins. I think we're their favorite whipping child. Getting rid of Ireland changed nothing with the position or the national media's opinion on our franchise. Don't drink their kool aid. It's a good job that is available.

Irresponsible for people to claim the Dolphins' GM job isn't desirable

People get so busy bad mouthing the Miami Dolphins, and expecting the worst from South Florida's NFL franchise, they have lost some perspective on the team's ongoing general manager search.

There are only two vacant GM jobs out there in the NFL. TWO!

There's the Miami Dolphins, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That means for an entire years the Dolphins have one of two opportunities to become a top level executive in the NFL.

Sure, the job doesn't come with final say on the Dolphins' coaching staff, and the salary cap. Whoever Steve Ross picks will have to work with Joe Philbin and Dawn Aponte, not manage them. But nothing about the team's power structure changed from the Jeff Ireland era. And the job does come with final say on the team's personnel (the 90 player training camp roster, the 53-man roster and the eight player practice squad).

The Tampa Bay job, where new head coach Lovie Smith reportedly has final say within the organization, doesn't provide that.

That is why it is irresponsible for people to claim the Dolphins' GM job isn't desirable. It is one of 32 unique opportunities to pick the groceries at the highest level of football.
