Michael Sam’s coach singles out Dolphins situation as bad fit

Even though both Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito came out in support of Michael Sam’s announcement that he was gay, Sam’s college coach isn’t sure Miami would be a good landing spot.

In an interview on ESPN Radio, Missouri coach Gary Pinkel singled out the Dolphins situation as one that could be a bad fit for last year’s SEC co-defensive player of the year.

“I think the incident that happened down in Miami with the Dolphins — I don’t know the people involved there, and I’m not really judging them, but when you have a locker room atmosphere like that, when people are verbally being destructive to each other and you call it fun, I think there’s a fine line there,” Pinkel said, via Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post. “I’m not one of the Righteous Brothers here, but we talk to our team all the time about how locker rooms are great in sports, locker rooms are awesome. It’s a great thing about being a member of the team. Guys like to bust each other, go after each other verbally. But there’s a certain point when what you say is hurtful and it doesn’t help the team, it hurts the team.

“If you have that kind of environment where people say anything they want and say mean, awful berating things to people, it probably will not work very well. But if you have a team that respects one another — I may be naive, that’s what we try to do.”

Just as Sam’s football skills might not be a fit for every scheme, his personality might not work in every locker room.

Landing in a stable environment with strong leadership will help. But even though Martin and Incognito won’t be back in Miami, not much about the Dolphins’ last season or this offseason lends itself to the idea that stability and leadership exist there.

So he's not really judging people...but he's basically passing judgment on the lockeroom. Got it.

And he doesn't know everyone and doesn't know the whole story (obviously he hasn't read the updates on tweets from Martin) but its safe for him to conclude that lockeroom is a bad environment. Got it.

Who knew this guy and Jonathan Martin's mother were the same person!

This goes with what I said earlier about the media controlling the narrative. They went full guns stating that Incognito was the bully and created a hellish environment in the lockeroom. It is the story they wanted.

But the evidence on hand has disproven that idea, yet I don't remember all of the major news networks, talk shows and newspapers reporting about Martin's actions, comments, behavior and tweets. We're still living in the fantasy world that he was a thoughtful, bullied kid who didn't fit in with the narrow minded monsters of Miami.

It can't be shocking to any of us that we still have a bad rep in the press. They love a bully story and will beat the horse until it is dead.

So he starts off saying he doesn't really know and doesn't want to judge, then proceeds to make a lot of claims and opinions.

Don't judge him on being being gay, but he and his coach can judge us without even knowing the truth. Got it too Jammer. Tolerance is a one way street like racism and religion. Progress is great! If you can call it that......

If what we hear about Kacy Rodgers as one of the quality coaches in Miami is true then I think Jordan will be looking good next year.

Stephen Ross: Michael Sam would be welcomed on the Dolphins

“Michael Sam’s announcement is a significant step in sports and I respect the choice that he made publicly,” Ross said. “His announcement will have no bearing either way on our evaluation of him as a player. Dennis Hickey, Joe Philbin and I all agree on the same thing; we’ll draft the best players that can help us win football games, have high character and contribute to the community. If he is a member of our organization, Michael will be welcomed here with open arms as part of our family.”

Those are the kinds of comments that owners, general managers and coaches around the league have been making in the days since Sam came out. In Ross’s case, the comments may be designed in part to combat criticism that the franchise received when Jonathan Martin left the team and Richie Incognito was suspended for bullying Martin. Where ever Sam winds up, his treatment in the locker room will be closely watched. But Ross knows the treatment of players in the Dolphins’ locker room is already under close scrutiny.

Would be nice... Im assuming the only thing holding him back is coaching, anyone with knowledge of the game that has been around him says he has crazy talent....

My point is Sam's sexual preference has nothing to do with him coming to Miami. Now if he was a seam threat TE, a fast RB with good blocking skills, or an OT... Then we could talk... But the last thing this team needs is to spend another draft pick on a DE.. Maybe late rounds, but the first 5 should be focused on getting the offense moving...

Political correctness at it's best.
