The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens are engaged in "active talks" with free agents Eugene Monroe and Dennis Pitta, but that no deals are imminent.
According to reporter Aaron Wilson, the Ravens have "work to do on both to get something done." Whether it's via a new deal or the franchise tag, Pitta is fully expected to remain in Baltimore. It's Monroe's status that's hazy. The Ravens freed up $4.95 million in cap space by releasing Jameel McClain and Vonta Leach on Thursday. Monroe, who turns 27 in April, has said he isn't interested in giving the Ravens a hometown discount. The Dolphins would reportedly be interested if he hits the open market.

I'm willing to bet reps from a few teams got info to Monroe's agent that he'll get a serious payday if he tests FA. Would Miami be willing to make him close to the highest paid LT in the NFL? Their approach could certainly be invest everything you can to get Monroe and Grimes, fill the other gaps with free agent bargains and draft picks.

Can't teams start negotiating this weekend with free agents?

I doubt the Ravens traded a 4th and 5th round pick to Jacksonville to get Monroe for 12 +- games in the 2013 season and then let him leave via free agency. They will do whatever they need to do to resign him. The bigger question is why didn't Miami trade for Monroe last year instead of trading a 6th round pick for McKinnie.

They should have extended him after trading for him if that is the case...

Pretty stupid of them not to do so. He's going to be more expensive now.

Miami was never made aware that he was on the trading block, which was stupid on the part of the Jaguars... they could have gotten Miami and Baltimore into a bidding war.

I agree that the Ravens will do everything they can to hopefully not let him go, but I don't know how cash strapped they are, or whether they anticipated they could face this problem?

Monroe is in the driver's seat on this one. If Graham and Hardy get locked up then he is the biggest name on the market. He's potenially setting himself up for two major paydays - now and maybe 4 years from now.

Ross has a bigger checkbook, wants big names and the agents are well aware of it.

It saddens me that if we really wanted a DE with that number 1 pick, we could have stayed put and either still gotten Jordan, or settled for Mingo or Ansah (potentially if the draft falls the same way).

That way, we could have used that 2nd we traded to get Jordan, to the Chiefs, in order to get Brandon Albert.

Then we maybe go 10-6, instead of 8-8. Or maybe we still finish 8-8, but we're arguing about why the hell did we take a DE in the 1st to begin with still.

A source tells the Baltimore Sun that the Ravens and free agent LT Eugene Monroe are "far apart" in contract negotiations.
Both sides are reportedly "highly motivated" to get a deal done before March 11, especially now that the Ravens have cleared their No. 1 priority by re-signing Dennis Pitta. Franchise tagging Monroe prior to Monday's 4ET deadline would cost $11.654 million. It's an expensive route to take, but would protect Baltimore against losing a 26-year-old blind-side blocker that is their best offensive lineman. It would also give the two sides until July 15 to work out a long-term deal. Monroe graded out as PFF's No. 10 left tackle in the league last season.

The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero believes free agent Eugene Monroe will be the Dolphins first choice left tackle if he reaches free agency.
Left tackle will be the priority for a Dolphins team that will need to fill perhaps three holes along the offensive line this offseason. Monroe is the number one target, but Branden Albert and Anthony Collins are also on Miami's radar. All three still could be re-signed by the current teams before free agency begins, however, which would force the Dolphins to move to other targets. No matter what, Miami's offensive line should be their number one concern this offseason.

If not Monroe, then Veldheer. Add Mack. No need to focus on anything but the oline in free agency and address the other parts in the draft.
Veldheer/Monroe at LT, Mack at C, Pouncey?/Draft pick/Thomas at Lg, Draft pick/Thomas/Garner at RG, Draft pick at RT
