On Friday, CBS Sports fueled the fire by reporting that the Dolphins are gauging interest in Jordan. And then the same report said the Dolphins might consider trading defensive end Cam Wake and receiver Mike Wallace.
But a team source tells The Palm Beach Post that the Dolphins have not spoken to any other teams about Jordan and that there hasn’t been any talk within the organization about trading Wake or Wallace.
So that says means that the Dolphins may internally have raised the idea of trading Jordan but haven’t actually shopped him yet.
Jordan played just 338 snaps last year and seems better suited as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. The Dolphins will remain a 4-3 defense as long as Kevin Coyle is defensive coordinator.
Despite limited action, Pro Football Focus graded Jordan as the league’s 28th defensive end of 52 in 2013. Jordan finished five spots ahead of Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon, who had a breakout season with 11.5 sacks but graded No. 39 in pass rush. There are still questions as to whether the sack total was a fluke.
There’s still a lot of promise with Jordan but the coaching staff has to figure the best way to use him in the 4-3 defense.
“I’m excited about Dion,” Hickey said Thursday on WFTL’s The Big O Show. “This is an important offseason for him. I saw him play a couple of times at Oregon and you’re always looking for pass rushing talent and he definitely has that. I’m excited to watch him grow and develop this offseason. We have some great coaches that are going to develop him.”
Trades in the NFL are not common although it’s become easier to trade high draft picks because of the new rookie wage scale that has lowered the salaries of first rounders. But the Dolphins would still take a $5 million cap hit if they traded Jordan. It’s unlikely the Dolphins would get anything more than a low first round pick in return. A second round pick might be more realistic if teams know the Dolphins don’t want Jordan. Miami could possibly try to trade up in the draft with Jordan as part of a package.
