Cornerback Dimitri Patterson ($5.3 million) and linebacker Philip Wheeler ($5 million) are due to earn the fourth-highest and fifth-highest salaries on the Dolphins next season, leaving both in question as free agency nears. The Dolphins have discussed a pay cut with at least one of them. One Dolphins source said Wheeler seemed to become complacent last season after getting a big contract, and general manager Dennis Hickey has tap-danced when asked about his linebackers.

There’s a big difference in their situations: Patterson has a $5.4 million cap hit if he stays, no cap hit if he’s cut. Wheeler has a $6.4 million hit whether he stays or goes, meaning it would be pointless to cut him unless Hickey finds an affordable and clearly better player.

Also, the Dolphins already have substantial cap space --- $39 million, fifth-most behind only Oakland, Jacksonville, Cleveland and Indianapolis.

Replace Wheeler with Jordan.

Wheeler was brought here to cover and blitz.

Jordan can do it better.

Why is that so easy to see for everyone except Coyle?

The problem is that Jordan has shown us nothing. Wheeler has shown us nothing. I agree do agree though, replace Wheeler with Jordan. Jordam was covering Gronk last year and I was like darn, the dude is fast. RUmor has it that Jordan's work ethic sucks.

He graded out better overall in his limited snaps than Olivier Vernon did in his extensive snaps.

He showed us that when he is on the field, he can actually cause problems. I can think of at least two interceptions that were caused by Jordan's pressure.

If you switch Ellerbe and Jordan to OLB, and find an MLB who can cause problem then this defense can be fearsome. I was hoping Miami could get Jon Beason to fill that role.

Do Wheeler and Misi provide anything other than depth at this point?

Oh boy

Quote:
Free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson will meet with the Dolphins Monday night.
Jackson has been a busy man since the Browns released him Wednesday. He's already met with the Titans and Broncos, and has also been linked to the Cardinals and Redskins. In Miami, Jackson would likely step into the middle linebacker spot and kick Dannell Ellerbe to the outside. Weak-side 'backer Philip Wheeler was a disaster last season.

Jackson was terrible against the run the past two years.

One of the most underrated LBs IMO. Jackson brings work ethic and heart.

I really like that thought right there.

What's the issue here Rich? He'll fit right in.

Yup.

Let's spend MORE money to keep something awful.

I think Wheeler getting swapped for Jordan would happen before Jodan goes over Misi on the depth chart. Philbin has said he likes Misi for his run stopping ability and no one really liked anything Wheeler did last year...like the rest I'm not sure why Jordan HAS to be a DE.

With Grimes getting signed that leaves the Tag open for someone...maybe we sign Soliai tag Starks? Maybe Clemons get tagged so we can worry about strong safety next year? All really depends on how many O-Line guys we plan on signing before the draft.

If Patterson can stay healthy and take less money we could potentially have a very scary DBack Tandem...I was thoroughly impressed with Patterson till the injury.

I don't see Miami using the TAG on anyone. Would love to have Dmitri back, but not at his salary right now. He had played only 4 games since he has been in Miami.

Phillip Wheeler was just awful last year, so I'm good either way. Let him walk or see if he can give you what you thought he could when Miami signed him.
