Thank goodness!

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... -new-deal/

Quote:
On Sunday night, PFT reported that cornerback Brent Grimes would not get the franchise tag from the Dolphins but that Grimes was likely to remain with the team after signing a new contract.

That proved to be correct. The Dolphins have announced that they have agreed to a new deal with Grimes.

There’s no word on how long the new deal might run — the Dolphins announced it is a multi-year pact — so we can’t be sure how many years Grimes will be in Miami beyond 2014. Regardless of how long it runs in total, the deal will likely come in with a lower price tag than the $11.834 million that Grimes would have stood to make under the franchise tag. That allows the Dolphins more money to use toward keeping their own free agents, like defensive tackles Paul Soliai and Randy Starks, or looking outside the organization for much-needed help on the offensive line.

Grimes, who turns 31 in July, was the best cornerback in Miami after joining the team as a free agent last season. He had 60 tackles, four interceptions and a touchdown in 16 games, which was all the Dolphins needed to see to know that they couldn’t afford to let him walk.

Resigning Grimes was a must.

So far all that is known is that it is a 4 year contract.

4 years $32 Million 16 million guaranteed

[Update: Grimes told Josina Anderson of ESPN the contract is a four-year deal. So the structure will be interesting as most CBs don't make it to the final year of their deal when they're 34.]

[Update: ESPN is also reporting the deal is for $32 million with $16 million guaranteed. So Grimes is getting an average of $8 million per year and the equivalent of two years guaranteed.]

I'm not sure if I would have given him a 4 year contract, but you have to roll the dice.

It looks like Miami could part ways with Grimes after 2 years without a lot a cap pain. The Dawn knows how to manage the cap and write team friendly contracts.

Number 2 CB overall based on Pro Football Focus.

I think this says a lot about how overblown the whole "Dolphins Organization is a Disaster" story has been.

This guy could have signed with more than half the teams in the league, but he chose to stay here. It can't be all that bad.

Completely agree. There isn't a story in the world that the sports media will not understate, they will blow everything out of proportion and exaggerate the details. Telling it like it really is doesn't get them the same ratings lol. It's unfortunate, but winning cures everything, especially in pro football. We'll see what happens.

So am I the only one who sees this as a very positive start for Hickey? Next... sign Starks or Soliai.

Sure it's a great start for Hickey, but if he didn't get this done he would have lost all of the little support he had!!! Next is persuading Philin/Coyle to move Jordan to OLB!!!!!!!! Then it's a real great start for Hickey haha

I was thinking the same way, bobby. If she agrees to a contract then I have the confidence that we'll be ok capwise.

Saw the news while I was at work, and to say I am very happy to see this news in and understatement. It is a good deal for Brent and the team.

I watched his interview and the film on him.
He's pretty good.
I think we did a good thing in singing him.
Every body seems to be worried about his age, and him getting hurt.
But getting injured can happen to the younger and best players.

Grimes is an excellent player. I hope he's able to play at this level for another four years. If he does, the deal will have been well worth it. Hopefully Jamar Taylor can step up this season and fill the role he was drafted to play. Either that or Patterson stays healthy for an entire season.

Yes he was.

Notice how V. Davis didn't get the tag?

Probably because the Colts feel optimistic about a deal getting done. Same reason the Dolphins were not going to use the tag on Grimes.

Make no mistake, Vontae is going to get paid.

I want us to resign Patterson but theres just a lot of hope that he stays healthy. If we resign him I doubt we sign another corner...we might draft one..but that depends on how the Lineman signing goes really.

I still wonder about Keller....I wonder if he plans to play in the NFL again....get one last crack at Swearinger.
