Dolphins next stop on D’Qwell Jackson’s victory tour

Because the Dolphins didn’t spend enough on free agent linebackers last offseason, they’re looking again.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean, former Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson is heading to Miami tonight to visit the Dolphins.

Jackson has previously dropped by to see the Titans and Broncos.

Former Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland spent a pile last offseason on Phillip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe.

New G.M. Dennis HIckey might not share the same high opinion of those players, but buying Jackson would create a bit of a logjam

And Wheeler can play the role of Sanchez, making multi millions sitting on the bench.

He's terrible again the run.

Outside of that, his play against the run has been atrocious. In 2013, he was the seventh-worst inside linebacker in terms of playing the run. One year earlier, his negative-9.6 grade was the fifth-worst inside linebacker run grade.

Obviously, his deficiencies versus the run show up on tape. Yet, there are times when I felt like the defensive linemen in front of him could have done more. The Browns’ defensive tackles didn’t exactly eat up blockers at the point of attack. On multiple occasions, opposing offensive linemen got to their second-level blocks with ease.

To successfully play the run as an inside linebacker, your defensive line has to do its part and prevent offensive linemen from getting to the second level. There are only a handful of inside linebackers (Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman) who can consistently shed second-level blocks and win at the point of attack.

As for what's next for Jackson, he shouldn't lack for suitors. NFL general managers are still going to look at the robust tackle totals he puts up when healthy and think he can help their teams. Jackson, despite not being great against the run, is quietly one of the league's better inside linebackers in coverage. Pro Football Focus ranked him 10th in coverage snaps per reception.

When Jackson does get into the play, he also does a stellar job of wrapping up. He missed just seven tackles all season, per PFF. Although aging linebackers don't typically receive a ton in guaranteed money—Jackson will certainly take a pay cut—some team will offer him a one-year deal at a pretty good salary in the not too distant future.

Except that Cleveland overall had a positive grade as a run defense, their nose tackle had a positive grade, most of their defensive ends had a positive grade with one exception, they were ranked 8th in yards per carry...

This guy would make our front 7 smaller and wouldn't help against the run.

Can he be worse than Ellerbe and Wheeler were last year?

I don't think so... if we can get out of one of those contracts and sign him to a 2 year deal for little money, I say why not.

Remember Rich, stats can be misleading, they don't tell the whole story. Not saying your wrong or anything, but the question is....As with any other player, is he an upgrade on what we have?

So your strategy is replace Jemarcus Russell with Ryan Leaf?

If you're going to eat up the cap hit from one of those existing contracts, why would you replace them with a guy that isn't going to address the primary issue?

As for stats being misleading, I'm not referencing stats, I'm referencing grades.

I think grades are misleading too. Just like stats can be.

Grades are rarely misleading, and in any case, have a lot less opportunity to be misleading than pure stats, and it's not even close.

If you go to PFF's rankings for example, position by position, typically the guys graded the highest at their position are (not) coincidentally also the names we hear the most, the players we see succeed the most with our own eyes.

Can a grade miss the mark? Sure. But it does so a lot less than just looking at a stat such as 90+ tackles.

Brandon Spikes is a much better fit...And you could use last years disapointment as depth and situational, to help with Spikes weaknesses...

would Spikes be OK in a 43 defense? I know he's a bigger, slower inside backer. I think more suited to play in a 34 defense.

He's top notch against the run but can't cover worth a lick.

And hits like a ton of bricks and intimidates the opposing offense....You would need some other option to help him with the pass on occasion but we have that. He is a luxury situational player we can afford.
What you gain is you won't have some back come in and start to dominate your defense like we saw so many times...AKA Blount

He would make our defense better than it is and isn't going to break the bank. Oh and he hates Billycheat..A motivated is always worth investing in.

I wonder what the time of position diff. is for the Browns. Could Jackson's run defense ratings be skewed if the Browns D was on the field for long periods of time? Zach Thomas was a tackling machine but he wore down as the game went on.

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins will move MLB Dannell Ellerbe to weak-side linebacker if the team signs a new middle linebacker.
The Dolphins are among the rumored four potential suitors for free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson, who is expected to pick a team by the end of the week. If moved to the weak side, Ellerbe would be replacing Philip Wheeler. Both were massive free-agent busts in 2013. Wheeler would then compete with Koa Misi on the strong side. Misi is considered Miami's best run defender.

Ellerbe doesn't seem fast enough to me to cover backs and tight ends a WLB.
