Read this analysis of Jarius Byrd's game.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2 ... irus-byrd/

Having a guy like this will allow Reshad Jones to go back to playing almost like an additional linebacker. The Dolphins will be able to drop 8 in the box, leave Brent Grimes on an island against the other team's best wideout and have Byrd help the second corner over the top as a single safety. It will allow our other corners to jump routes more as they can be confident in the playmaking ability of their last line of defense.

It will also help take the pressure off our linebackers in coverage and allow them to focus more on the run. I think part of the reason our linebackers struggled is because of how much they were asked to do in this scheme. For an Ellerbe to be successful, the system needs to be simplified for him.

A guy like this can change your entire defense around. Rather than spending on several pieces to have an impact, you can spend on one.

Heck yeah and he is young too! We can only hope Hickey and Aponte get aggressive and creative to get this guy!

I like that idea, but will the cost allow miami to go after much needed linemen?

We have enough cap space to go after Byrd and one of the big name left tackles.

After that, we can draft a right tackle and bargain hunt for guards.

I completely agree, drop the contracts of Patterson and Moore, and you most likely have this guy locked in.

So the question becomes, IF Miami got the free agent LT they coveted AND Byrd.

Rich, IF Evans the receiver from A & M or some big bodied fast receiver were available at pick 19, would you consider it? Because the draft is so deep with lineman.

Also, with the second pick, how about Tre Mason becoming Bill Lazor's version LeSean McCoy?

At this time, I'm not educated enough to speak draft, but my tendency is to still look at right tackle, or a right tackle that could be your left tackle of the future.

Would love to go after Byrd, but if he does get to FA, it going to be a major battle with Cleveland. His former DC is the HC for Cleveland, and I would think and have heard that the Browns would make a run at him.

Pay the big money to guys who can change games. Byrd could be one of those guys so I have no problem with it.

If Miami's big offseason signings are Grimes, Monroe/Albert, and Byrd then you have some proven guys in very key positions.

You can still cut Moore to free up room for Byrd, or, for more space to find fillers.

I would definitely be happy with that Dan.

Byrd's the top FA..............we signed the top FA last year. The priority should be to resign Solia, pay for a LT and Guard, then we have flexibility to go defense with the 1st or 2nd pick and get Calvin Pryor, Safety - Louisville or Chris Borland, ILB - Wisconsin. We may even be able to trade down in the first found, get an additional 2nd and get both with an OL in the 2nd.

NFL.com take on Calvin Pryor........

"BOTTOM LINE A big, physical, hammering run defender brings an enforcer mentality to the box and an intimidating, punishing presence to the back end. Is arguably the most violent hitter in this year's draft class and should make his presence felt readily in the pros."

NFL take on Chris Borland

"Mayock called Borland "as fun a guy to watch on tape as I have ever seen" and praised his instincts and quickness. He compared Borland to former Dolphins LB Zach Thomas and a "sawed-off" Luke Kuechly."

Expensive, but the prospect of having Grimes and Byrd back there... that's 75% of the field locked up lol. With our pass rush... Seattle who? Legion of What?

We can resign Soliai, sign a left tackle and sign a guard (they won't be near as expensive as left tackle) and sign Byrd.

We can then focus on right tackle in the draft, its deep, defensive tackle and linebacker.

Byrd is a game changer. He changes your whole defense. He is a guy worth spending big money for in order to address several issues at once.

Love to have him, but he could command $10M+/ yr. With Jones at approximately $5M/yr, Grimes at $8M/yr in 2015 and no clear No. 2 Corner............I just don't see us making a big play for Byrd. Maybe if we traded Jones, but I don't think anyone wants his contract.

Bill Polian's take on Jaruis Byrd:

Quote:
"He's a speed-deficient safety," Polian said. "Safeties don't get faster as the years go on."

Byrd is the third-ranked safety on Polian's list, behind Antoine Bethea (who received an 'A') and Chris Clemons (who received a 'B').

Bill Polian is smoking good crap if he thinks Clemons is better than Byrd. And Antoine Bethea is not that good in coverage.
