Jason La Canfora ... is he ever right?

I will say that Starks has done everything asked of him. And he can play DT and DE whenever needed. $6 million a year sounds like a good price.

Man I hope so... losing Starks and Soliai in one offseason would be too big a blow to overcome this year.

Post Miami close to resigning DT Randy Starks
This is from ProFootballTalk.com.

[b]Dolphins defensive tackle Randy Starks appears ready to stay in Miami.

The Dolphins and Starks are close to an agreement that would keep Starks around at a salary of about $6 million a year, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS.

The 30-year-old Starks has been to two Pro Bowls in his six seasons with the Dolphins, and he’s strong both against the run and as a pass rusher. He’s a player the Dolphins don’t want to lose in free agency, and now it appears that they won’t.

Starks is the No. 29 player in our Free Agent Hot 100.

I thought it would be Soliai that they kept, but this is leading me to believe that Miami will be playing a lot more 4-3 than 3-4 defensive setup in 2014.

I really didnt think he had a big market all along and that must be the case. Thought he was unhappy here, but here he is set to resign with us.

They were already playing 4-3 almost exclusively.

We couldn't afford to lose both Soliai and Starks. I think based on snaps and production, Starks was the better player to keep.

That being said, what is Odrick's future? He is in a contract year and it appears we're going to have two other tackles getting paid millions for the next couple of years.

If the Dolphins are offering $6 million a year, it means he did have a big enough market for them to go that high in the first place after letting him shop around.

Soliai just got paid $6.5 million a year which is a lot for a part time player that specializes in only one thing.

But yes, I am surprised to see Starks wanting to stay after the one finger salute.

I think Seattle proved that you can never have enough good DT/DE personnel. Having depth along the DL is essential. Odrick is a kid Miami drafted and has been very solid.

Thought Miami did some switching from time to time back to a 3-4. But if that is the case, then Starks is a better fit.

I really haven't heard any teams show interest in him.

They claimed to deploy a 3-4 from time to time but I don't recall ever seeing 4 linebackers on the field at once.

They did rush three a lot in nickel and dime situations... maybe that's what they meant by 3-4.

I would think 6 is pretty high, all things considered but i'll be happy to have him back.

This might sound funny but when I saw him flick off the sideline it made me like him more lol I like the guys playing with that fire

Seattle, Oakland and Atlanta showed interest. Obviously Atlanta isn't interested anymore after signing Soliai and Tyson Jackson. Oakland seems to be sitting back and waiting rather than jumping into the fray after spending big on Safford. Seattle has $119 million in cap liability so they can't be as free wheeling early in free agency and probably prefer to focus on tier 2 free agents.

Starks probably did have a bigger dollar amount in mind and now that he is seeing the market coming down (if you don't get signed during day 1 of free agency, you're going to be disappointed in your contract) he figures he should get as much as he can.

I'm guessing he was expecting $8-9 million a year but his counterpart set the market at $6-7 million a year, which is what Starks will probably get.

@AbramsonPBP: Randy Starks' deal is being finalized per @RapSheet. Starks is coming back to Miami.

@AdamHBeasley: Regarding the potential Randy Starks deal, I'm hearing that $6M a year is way too ambitious. Will come in below that.

The lower the better. As I said before, Hickey has played the DT market perfectly.

I was hoping this worked out. Starks has always been an under rated guy. 2 years ago he had a great year and Miami franchised him. He was unhappy with that and had a down year last year. He's a baller and a guy you want around.

Statistically speaking yes.. Not sure of the total breakdown as far as the PFF thing, but NFL lists he had more tackles, and assists in 2013 vs 2012. Only thing that went down was 4.0 sacks vs 4.5, not really anything to worry about being he played less time for sure..

I am not confident in my source, but I am reading on a fantasy site that he played in 811 snaps in 2012, and 674 in 2013.

For some reason I thought I read a lower number on his snap count, but cant be sure

PFF has Starks playing 742 snaps and rated as the 7th best DT in the NFL.

I find it kinda funny that we let the guy go that wanted to stay and kept the guy that wanted to leave.(or so it seemed)

If the freakin Raiders would quit spending so much dang money on the linemen we wanted we would have had a more interesting few days. But, all in all, I'm not disappointed by what we have gotten.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing. Even though Starks played better than Soliai, there was a bigger market for a big run stuffing 3-4 nose tackle, and not necessarily for Starks. Would Ireland have resigned Starks? I think Ireland would be remembering the salute.
