The Dolphins announced a signing on Tuesday afternoon as the team continues to add to the roster during the offseason.
MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have signed free agent kicker/punter Matt Szymanski to a one-year contract, the team announced today.

The 6-1, 196-pound Szymanski joins Miami after spending time with the Kansas City Chiefs in training camp (2012-13) and as a member of their practice squad (2012). Szymanski played in 52 games between SMU (2009-10) and Texas A&M (2006-07), competing in 26 contests for the Mustangs and Aggies. He converted 35 of 58 (60.3 pct.) career field goal attempts with a long of 61 yards and was successful on all 131 extra point attempts. He also punted 123 times for 5,105 yards (41.5 avg.) with a long of 74 yards. Szymanski originally entered the NFL with the Chiefs as an undrafted college free agent following the 2012 NFL Draft. Born August 13, 1988 in College Station, Texas, Szymanski attended A & M Consolidated High School in College Station, Texas.

Maybe, but they signed him as a punter. Brandon Fields is eating up $3.5 mil in cap room and we could save $2.4 mil by cutting him.

We need to keep Fields. He's the only sure thing every year.

That's like saying "We need to keep the over priced moped because all of the Yugos keep breaking down".

How about we replace the Yugos with Ferraris?

Not sure what you mean, he's the best punter in the league.

The term “weapon” is generously applied to describe offensive skill plays and occasionally used on defense as well.

Dolphins punter Brandon Fields is an asset of a different kind, but the term still applies.

“He’s a huge weapon,” kicker Caleb Sturgis said of Fields. “When you can turn the field like that, you’re going to put yourself in good position.”

It’s certainly never a good sign for a team to see its punter on the field, but when the situation arises, there’s arguably no one better in the league than Fields.

The Michigan State product entered the weekend as the NFL’s leader in gross punting average, a simple measure of how far beyond the line of scrimmage the ball travels. Fields is the only punter whose average is more than 50 yards.

At 6-5 and 249 pounds, Fields is one of the biggest punters in league.

That size, combined with the proper form and attention to detail, can send the ball soaring.

I think we would be better off finiding ways to afford to keep our good players instead of getting rid of sure things to save a few bucks. It's not like we're in a horrible cap situation and cutting Fields will give us the room to sign our 1st rd pick.

Field position is huge for us. How many games were down to the last drive, < 10 point nail-biter types? I know a punter doesn't score points, but he may well have been one of our most important defensive players last year, in a sense.

I agree. A great punter is a huge advantage in games.

Relax, no one is suggesting getting rid of Fields or that he isn't a valuable player.

THis shows us how far the FIns and their fans have fallen. We are worried about a punter and field position....shame. How about we score on most drives to keep the punter off the field?

That was the point of my analogy with the moped, Yugos and Ferraris.

We have too many Yugos so we rely more on our moped.

The Superbowl champs have a punter rated in the bottom third of the league.

The good teams have good QBs and good coaches.

Mak responded that it was Sturgis competition, I was simply speculating on another possibility as to why the Dolphins brought him in.

If my post had said WE SHOULD cut Fields to save $2.4 million, I would be condoning cutting Fields.

My post does not say that. It simply points out a possible strategy for the Dolphins. Capiche?
