I would be open to this signing but only on an incentive based contract, but he could possibly be a nice addition to the WR core.

Burleson would be a good add, but I'd rather add a WR in the draft so that we can develop him.

Nate Burleson to visit Dolphins

Nate Burleson AP

Nate Burleson got used to cold winters while spending the last four years as a member of the Lions, but he may be able to leave the heavy winter gear at home in 2014.

Steve Wyche of NFL Network reports that Burleson will visit the Dolphins, whose Miami home requires no layering to get through the winter months.

Burleson was released by the Lions in February to clear $5.5 million under the salary cap, a move that was made easier by the fact that Burleson missed 17 games because of injuries over the last two years. When he wasn’t injured, Burleson was a reliable target for Matthew Stafford but the Lions signed Golden Tate and are taking their offense in a different direction under new coach Jim Caldwell this season.

If Burleson does land in Miami, he’ll join Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Rishard Matthews and Brandon Gibson on the depth chart at receiver. Hartline and Gibson are both coming off of knee injuries, but the team hopes to have both of them on the field for camp.

It would be hard not to like this signing. You know this guy will bring not bring any negative attention to the locker room. I'm guessing he would most likely beat out Matthews for that 4th receiver option?

'Mando's head-scratching thoughts on it:

Quote:
Burleson isn't really an upgrade over any of Miami's top four wide receivers -- Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson or Rishard Matthews. He obviously could be a good experienced backup as a No. 5 wide receiver to guard against Hartline or Gibson not being fully recovered from last year's knee injuries.

But the No. 5 wide receiver rarely makes it to the game-day roster and when he does, usually has to play special teams. I don't think Burleson would be enthusiastic about either of those two ideas because he hasn't returned a punt since 2009 nor a kick since 2010.

Another thing: This draft is deep in WR talent. Rookies cost one-third against the cap that a veteran such as Burleson costs.

He's better than Binns and Mathews and the new receiver we signed yesterday. Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, and Burelson sounds pretty good IMO.

After doing some more research on Burelson, I'd say Matthews has the upperhand for the 4th wideout position. Nate is a 33 year old, sub 4.50 wide receiver with average height. His type is a dime of dozen around the league right now. I am not sure why Miami has interest in the guy to be honest.

Matthews is the young up and coming receiver. IMO, no way I see Miami leap frogging Burleson over him.

Burleson as a 5th option an insurance policy at best.

I think Matthews is going to be good. Binns can be that jump ball/red zone guy if healthy.

Someone suggested Burleson's visit was a favor to the agent. He's already moving on to other teams for visits.

I think he's a pretty good insurance policy in camp in case one of the guys coming back from injury has a setback. Unless we plan on taking a WR in the first 3 rounds, which I doubt. It seems Hickey is intent on upping the level of competition everywhere. Makes one wonder about the QB position...

Now, about that offensive line...

This could be a good signing as binns cant catch and hartline and gibson are coming off serious knee injuries. I really like matthews, but outside of him there is wallace and even he has shown inconsistency so adding a wide receiver can only be a good thing for philbens offense

I'm personally hoping we draft a receiver in the 2nd or 3rd round. Burleson really doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Miami unless they aren't sold that Gibson will be 100% by the beginning of the season. If that is the case then Burleson is a solid slot receiver that could fill in for Gibson.

Barry Jackson's info on Burleson today:

Quote:
### One positive to keep in mind on receiver Nate Burleson, who is visiting Dolphins headquarters today after dining with team officials last night: His 5.7 average for yards-after-catch last season (on 39 catches) was outstanding --- 20th in the league and far better than anyone with the Dolphins. Brian Hartline averaged 4.1, Mike Wallace 3.8.

Burleson will fly to Cleveland tonight to meet with the Browns on Saturday, then make a decision on his future in the next few days.

Heading into their visit with Burleson, the Dolphins had made offers to every free agent who has visited.

Signing Burleson is an attempt at fail-safe for some of the injuries the unit is coming off of. However they STILL need to draft somebody.

He's playing for the Browns.

Quote:
Browns signed WR Nate Burleson to a one-year contract. He chose Cleveland over Miami. Burleson, 33 in August, is more of a locker-room than on-field asset at this stage of his career. He posted a 39-461-11.8-1 stat line across nine games in Detroit last season, missing seven with a broken arm. He missed ten games the year before due to a broken leg. Burleson provides reliable hands in the slot, but his playmaking ability evaporated years ago. He'd be best in a fourth receiver role with the Browns.

Also, from The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson:
Quote:
9 p.m. Sunday note: Veteran receiver Nate Burleson has decided to sign with Cleveland instead of Miami. The Dolphins wanted to sign him, but he saw a better opportunity with the Browns because they have fewer veteran receivers.

The Dolphins are still in good shape at receiver with Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, Rishard Matthews and Armon Binns. Hartline, Gibson and Binns are coming off significant knee injuries, but the Dolphins have said they expect all three to be ready for the start of the season.

Binns, Hartline and Gibson are not expected to practice during training camp. The Dolphins may sign a few of the FA receivers out there or may be forced to draft a receiver first round. They are suddenly very thin at the position right now.

Does anyone have Roberto Wallace on speed dial? Its about time he lived up that "the next Brandon Marshall" billing.
