with their 4th round pick.

The Dolphins add a piece to the secondary with 4th round pick CB Walt Aikens out of Liberty College. At 6'1, 203 lbs and 32 1/4" arms, Aikens has the size to go against some of the bigger wide receiver in the NFL, or more likely make the move to safety, as he started his career at Illinois as a safety. He has nice feet with good hips and is very fluid in his backpedal. Versatile, as he was asked to play both press and off man coverage. Good, aggressive tackler and impressed at the Senior Bowl. The concerns are that he may not have top elite speed and can be a little to aggressive in coverage with grabbing. Average ball skills, but did have 3 interceptions his last season and tracks the ball well. Overall, a very good athlete that ran a 4.49 40, and has very good size. I expect this young man to end up as a safety for Miami with nice versatility.

Still no help for the run defense. I guess we are looking at a multi-year plan here and that makes sense with all the holes on the team. We brought in a safety to pair with Jones, so is this a move for depth only....or perhaps to put some heat on our projected starters?

I am guessing, but I am thinking he projects as a safety. In that respect he provides good run support once they bust through the linebackers.

.....it is the busting through the linebackers that I worry about.

:haha I said it a bit of tongue-and-cheek there.

Strange. Some analysts had him mocked lower in the draft as with other draft picks that we drafted.

He has the size of Sean Taylor at safety...not like I'm making any comparisons now...

I don't see the "many holes" you speak of.

This team was 8-6 last year before that epic melt down - and we beat some hefty competition too.

A little faith eh? Isn't that was fans are supposed to have?

With all the negativity around here you'd think we went 3-13 last year.

Pick Analysis: "There were 20-plus teams at Liberty's pro day, and they were all there to get a better look at Aikens. He's got the size everyone is looking for at corner and has pretty good speed, running the 40 in a hand-timed 4.49 seconds." -- Gil Brandt

Weaknesses
Is tight-hipped and lacks ideal foot speed, which creates separation in man coverage. Average instincts -- can be late to diagnose run-pass reads and locate the ball, is a tick slow to sort out routes and too easily lured by nods and fakes. Often plays into the boundary. Benefits from facing average competition. Character will require closer examination following dismissal from Illinois after a misdemeanor theft conviction.
Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7
Bottom Line
Exceptional-sized, Illinois transfer with enough physicality to function as a short-area, press corner and contribute on special teams.
-Nolan Nawrocki

NFLDraftScout.com had him rated as a 3rd round prospect.

Miami Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey addressed the media last night following the end of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Starting off in the fourth round, we added Walt Aikens out of Liberty. He was a player that we watched closely. Again, with a lot of these guys, several of these guys were from small schools. Our scouts do a great job of digging under every rock and going through every school and trying to find good players wherever we can find them. Walt Aikens was one of those players. I first saw him at the Senior Bowl as we watched him and did a lot more work on him. We really liked the skillset that he brings, a tall, physical corner that has ball skills and is really productive. We really envision him as a special teams contributor. We really liked what he brought in that aspect. (He) was one of those players who we brought in for a visit. Again, with a lot of small-school players, we want to put them in our building, get them with our coaches (and) get them in our environment to get a good feel for them and how they will fit in our locker room. He did a great job when he came in there.
