The Palm Beach Post considers Richard Matthews the favorite for the Dolphins' slot receiver job.

Matthews took over as Miami's slot receiver in Week 9 last season, filling in for an injured Brandon Gibson. He appeared in all 16 games (five starts) and finished with 41 catches, 448 yards, and two touchdowns. Gibson is owed $3.7 million in 2014 and in jeopardy of losing his roster spot coming off knee surgery.

It would be a shame if Gibby can't come back. He was a very solid producer that was hitting a rhythm with Tannehill. Matthews is OK, but flat out disappears too often.

Once again dont take this seriously. If they were going to cut Gibson (which makes little sense imo anyway) they'd most likely do it now or earliar then wait. Plus he's better

While it is good to see our former 7th round pick, Matthews, developing, Brandon Gibson made a bigger impact in our offense.

This will be sorted out in TC, then solidified during the season, there may be packages for each guy, there may be a newcomer who flashes, they always sort this out on the field.

Why would they most likely do it now? It is more expensive to cut him now than after training camp.

Brandon Gibson has begun "light jogging" as he rehabs from his Week 8 patellar tendon tear.
Although recent speculation has posited Gibson's roster spot is in danger, the Miami Herald doesn't believe that to be the case. Cutting Gibson would cause a $2 million salary cap penalty. It's possible, however, that Gibson won't be ready for Week 1, perhaps opening the season on the reserve/PUP list.
