It seems that all teams have their share of problem children. I don't mind adding some as long as we have a system in place to help them. One good thing is that they are low-risk players in that we got them on the real cheap. We can cut them easily if we see them as players unwilling to improve.

### The Dolphins’ off-field issues last season haven’t deterred them from signing players with blemishes. Miami has added several, at low risk, in recent days.

Among them: LSU defensive tackle Anthony Johnson (reportedly a positive drug test at NFL Combine); running back Damien Williams, who averaged 4.9 yards per carry was last season before being dismissed from the Oklahoma team for rules violations; seventh-round Marist defensive end Terrence Fede (suspended all of 2010 for rules violations); fifth-round Liberty cornerback Walt Aikens (previously pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property, though he asserted Saturday it wasn’t his fault); and Temple defensive tackle Kamal Johnson (police say he assaulted and locked his girlfriend –-- who he accused of cheating on him --- in a bedroom for 3 ½ hours against her will 18 months ago, but the kidnapping charge was reduced to disorderly conduct and harassment).

Also, we're told the Dolphins conveyed that they planned to offer a contract to UM’s Seantrel Henderson (who had multiple positive marijuana tests) if he went undrafted before Buffalo took him in the seventh round.

I think in todays NFL every player has at least a blemish so if you want to field a team of choir boys you might not have a team.

Ya, that's quite the disconnect from what Jilbin is supposed to be about.

Considering that he came close to the chopping block, I think he knows he needs to win. I"m happy the honeymoon is over. I'm not a big Philben supporter.

I don't think Philbin has a problem with guys that have had past problems..It`s just when they start to act up he don't have a problem setting them free. It's the NFL...Unlike most jobs where if you are a convicted felon you need not apply.

The NFL is full of examples of players who messed up in college and went on to become good players at the next level. It's a low risk high reward proposition, especially when you're dealing with undrafted guys. If they cause problems, you can simply cut them, no harm no foul.

Agreed. My take is if you have remorse and a good attitude moving forward then Philbin may be open minded. Its the bad past + bad attitude + continued immaturity that is a recipe for banishment from Dolphinland.

This is interesting.

Quote:
### By signing California linebacker Chris McCain this week, the Dolphins now have added at least three rookies who were thrown off their college teams (Liberty’s Walt Aikens – by Illinois; Oklahoma’s Damien Williams and McCain). They also added another, Marist’s Terence Fede, who was suspended a year.

I'm sure they have changed for the better. If not, I'd look into mental disorders for these guys, get them the help they need so they can contribute and not make mistakes anymore.....

That must have been an Ireland thing to bail on troubled kids ... unless Philben is more desperate to win now.

This. He knows his seat is hot. Can't make demands when you don't have a track record of winning.

Adapting is a great trait to have as a coach.
