With Dolphins C Mike Pouncey out at least three months after hip surgery, Miami's O-line will have five brand-new opening-day starters.

Sucks.

3 months is considered optimistic. Could miss first half of the season.

Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey, the Dolphins’ only returning starter on an offensive line that was overhauled in the offseason, underwent hip surgery Monday and is expected to miss at least three months, meaning he likely will be sidelined for at least the first two games of the regular season and potentially more.

Under the most optimistic of projected recovery timetables, Pouncey could return for the Kansas City game Sept. 21 or against Oakland on Sept. 28 in London, which will be followed by a bye week. But recovery could take as long as four months.

If the Dolphins do not believe he will be back before the bye, they might place him on the physically-unable-to-perform list, which would sideline him for the first six games.

Pouncey sustained the torn labrum during the team’s offseason program, but neither Pouncey nor the Dolphins initially believed the injury was serious. He participated in the team’s final two offseason practices last week after missing the first. ...

There are about a dozen veteran free agent centers still available, including Samson Satele, David Baas, Mike Gibson, Andre Gurode, Dan Koppen, Brad Meester, Fernando Velasco and Kyle Cook.

...

The good news is it happened now instead of during the season or at the start of it so hopefully we can get a replacement in there. Nate garner can play center. I think dan koppen could be serviceable he sure has played good against miami for years.

I guess the question is who is playing guard for miami? If dallas thomas can step up and maybe the rookie turner is ready then you could move smith or garner to center. I think you have to sign a center though. Too bad they didnt sign one like i wanted earlier in the offseason.

If Dan Koppen is healthy, there is a seasoned veteran that you could plug in and play. The guy has played center for Tom Brady and Peyton Manning (before tearing his ACL in 2013). Once a very steady guy.

For a full list of current available centers: http://www.nfl.com/freeagency

I am sure they are kicking all the tires they can starting from within the current roster, but going after a seasoned veteran might be the way to hold down the fort until Pouncey returns.

I am personally not a fan of plugging in someone from last season that may have struggled, although I don't know what Garner or Brenner's grade was subbing for Pouncey.

Hopefully we will take a look at him, but he is also an 11 year veteran coming off of an ACL.

I'm not sure if Satele is the answer either as he was just released by the Colts, but he did start for 7 years. He also had a couple good years (but not for us;).

Quote:
Satele's release comes as little surprise. Indy gains $4 million against the cap by cutting a seven-year NFL starter who finished as the league's 31st-ranked center out of 35 qualifiers last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Yeah the ACL injury for Koppen was back in 2013. Hopefully, he has kept himself up. Bottom line is I sure hope they find the best available as suffice to say I have little confidence in someone on our existing roster can sub in for Pouncey while he is out.

There’s a full bus of capable-if-unremarkable veteran centers on the street, and the Dolphins have plenty of time to look for one of them.

The simple reality is that wholesale change was already happening, so adjusting is something they’re used to.

It's not just a matter of getting a vet who has been solid; there's also the idea of needing a good scheme fit as well. We need an athletic lineman, not a mauler... which is why I thought Satele might be good. I didn't realize he was rated so poorly last year. At this point, anyone who is left out there is going to have their issues for sure.

Here's a link to a breakdown Omar gave of the options to replace Pouncey. He also mentions Satele.

Most of those guys didn't play much last year at center. Satele, Meester, Velasco and Cook did, but nothing to write home about. Satele is probably the best fit from a scheme perspective, but he's never been a very good player. However he is a good pass protector, only allowing 1 sack and 14 pressures last year. I'd take a look at him because right now we have our right guard playing center and I don't think with all of these new players we can afford to be moving guys around...

And we definitely cannot have two rookies playing the right side to start the season. That's a recipe for disaster.

I'd take a look at Koppen too. Keep him for the first 5 or 6 weeks.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket has some of the best one liners in movie history. Then they go to Vietnam and its like a totally different movie.

Very true Rich, it was like 2 different movies, but the 1 liners didn't stop then, there were some good ones in the 2nd half of that movie, like the one I used, also the 1 liner Jammer used, some memorable ones of the top of my head, "no more boom boom for this baby san", "I'll trade you some ARVN rifles,... never been fired and only dropped once", "mee so horney", "Cowboy's dead, looks like your fresh out of friends", "hey Joker, you should be nominated for the congressional medal of... ugly", like Mak said, great movie.

Too bad the drill sargent didn't go to Vietnam with them. His one liners were the best.
