Nate Garner is one of the longest tenured Miami Dolphins players for a reason.

I often refer to Garner, who has been with the team since he was claimed off waivers in 2008, as the Swiss Army knife of the offensive line because of his versatility.

He's the O-line's utility hitter because of his ability to play every position, and has been plugged in as a starter at guard, tackle and center throughout his career.

Garner has started 19 games in his five seasons with the Dolphins, and two of those games were at center last season. The Dolphins beat San Diego 20-16 and suffered a 20-16 loss to the Panthers in those games.

Free agent C Andre Gurode reached out to the Dolphins following the news of Mike Pouncey's hip surgery.
The Dolphins have yet to return Gurode's call, however. Pouncey is expected to miss some regular season action after undergoing surgery for a torn labrum. Gurode, 35, has started a total of nine games over the last three seasons and has been bouncing around the league since his five-time Pro Bowl days with Dallas.

Gurode is not what I would call a good scheme fit. He's more of a mauler than a zone blocker, if he is still even capable of mauling.

There are other centers that are better scheme fits and just as good (or bad) as Gurode.

Bottom line, even if they decide to go with Garner b/c of their comfort level with him, they need to get a vet with some position flexibility in here that fits the zone scheme. I don't have strong feelings about who that should be; that's the GM's job. Standing pat is not an acceptable option.

### Andre Gurode, a five-time Pro Bowl center (2006-2010) and two time All-Pro, reached out to the Dolphins through his agent this week, hoping Miami will sign him to fill in for Mike Pouncey, who is expected to miss two to six regular-season games after hip surgery Tuesday.

The Dolphins returned the call late yesterday but said they are going to hold off bringing him in but didn't close the door.

Gurode, 35, isn't the player he once was. Since leaving the Cowboys, where he played several years at a very high level, Gurode has a total of nine starts for Baltimore, Chicago and Oakland the past three years.

But the Dolphins have been making brief preliminary inquiries about the health/status of some available centers, though it remains to be seen if Miami will bring in any for visits.

Among the veteran free agents available: Dan Koppen, former Dolphin Samson Satele, Fernando Velasco, Brad Meester, Ryan Cook and David Baas.

If you believe you already have in-house options, than yes, it is.

Definitely nervous for Miami to do again what did not work last season.....

Rich? Anyone have stats on how Garner did in Pouncey's absence last season? I don't want to be too hasty in my opinion as I don't remember the results.

Well...

St least with Garner manning the C position through the summer..... The young guys will be getting a long look at guard....

Dallas, Sammy, and the Rookie.....

Could be a positive for development.... Horrible for chemistry

The Dolphins would be smart to bring in someone that has actually done the job successfully in the NFL even though they may be near the end of their careers. This would get him up to speed.

As I said in my post, if you think Garner is the in-house option as a starter, you still need to bring in someone to provide depth. That someone should be able to provide some security not only as a zone blocking center, but come with some position flexibility too, since that is what Garner provides. I will feel a lot more comfortable if they bring in a vet, regardless of who they decide their starter is. Heck, I have felt they needed another veteran interior lineman anyway; this just accentuates the need. Just my opinion.

And who would that be? Seriously, the Dolphins need to bring a veteran in to compete for the job.

Hate to say it, but I think the end result is Smith at center with Turner at LG and Thomas at RG. Garner and Brenner remain as the immediate backups.

From what I've read it sounds like Smith has been taking a lot snaps at center.

Dave, if the Dolphins do not sign the best available veteran to step in for the first 3-4 games, shame on them as I can see deja vu written all over again with Tannehill getting thrown on his butt, especially if we use someone that was a part of that ridiculously poor line from last year.
