Ireland also likes finding linebackers, as shown again by the five-man haul at the position during the draft. Including fifth-year man Tim Dobbins, acquired from the Chargers in a Day 1 trade that saw the Dolphins drop out of the No. 12 slot, coach Tony Sparano now has 13 linebackers on his roster.http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miam ... full.story
Of those, only the inside starting combination of Karlos Dansby and Channing Crowder appears set. Everything else is up for grabs.
Two months after saying he had "some decent players" at linebacker, Ireland was far more upbeat about the collection of talent there now.
"I feel great about it," Ireland said. "There's going to be competitive positions there, both outside and inside. I feel like we've got some depth there, which we didn't have a whole lot of the last couple years."
Besides Edds, the Dolphins added two more linebackers in the seventh round Saturday: Chris McCoy from Middle Tennessee State and Austin Spitler from Ohio State.
For a team that released Joey Porter in March and allowed Jason Taylor to leave via free agency last week, adding options at linebacker was a high priority.
As for veteran reserve inside linebacker Reggie Torbor, still due a combined $6.1 million the next two seasons, Ireland insisted his status was solid.
"Reggie's on our football team," Ireland said. "He's going to compete for a position at linebacker. Nothing's changed with Reggie."
