For the first time since 2004, the Dolphins didn’t draft an offensive skill player, though the team did use its 2010 (and 2011) second-round pick to get Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Ireland said the heavy emphasis, if not overemphasis, on defense wasn’t by design.

“It’s kind of the way it unfolded,” he said. “We felt like we needed some defensive players and some guys on that side. It’s just kind of the way it unfolded.

“We stuck to our board and went that way.”

By day’s end, the Dolphins had created extensive competition at linebacker (13 now on the roster), found a free safety candidate (Jones) and an incredible athlete who could be the nickel back of the future (Carroll).

The Dolphins also passed up a chance at 15 tight ends selected in the final four rounds or a running back to develop with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams in the final year of their contracts.

“Obviously we’re aware of the situation on our team,” Ireland said. “You have Ricky [Williams] and Ronnie [Brown] kind of in their last year. We’re aware of all those things. We have them for another year too, so anything can happen that way.

“The draft falls certain ways and you can’t help the way it falls. We’re not ignoring those positions by any means, but I felt like we stuck to our board pretty good and stayed the course.”

I'm glad they didn't take a running back. They are relatively easy to find and I'm looking forward to seeing what Kory Sheets can do with some extended time this preseason.
