Philbin said middle linebacker Koa Misi, who played for the first time since Week 1 after injuring his ankle, “wasn’t ready to go” at the end of the game. Philbin did not elaborate.
So the Dolphins had outside linebacker Jelani Jenkins in the middle. Coyle said Jenkins, who is better in coverage than Wheeler, likely would have been on Quarless had Misi been available.
Coyle also said the Dolphins used single coverage on Quarless — who ran a quick pattern to the outside of the end zone — based on the Packers’ tendencies. Coyle said Green Bay had been in that formation only twice this season and both times threw inside to wide receivers.
“If you know their history, their two main targets in the red zone were (Jordy) Nelson and (Randall) Cobb, almost exclusively this year,” Coyle said.
Wheeler said after the game that he hadn’t practiced that play during the week. Coyle said it’s because the Packers hadn’t run it this season.
“You don’t start creating plays that you don’t anticipate happening in the game,” Coyle said. ...
