Do the math, we've only got 7 out of 37 players currently on the roster from the five years prior to the Trifecta showing up. Of those 7 players, only 5 are starters. Chances are, we'll lose some more this year as we bring in rookies and free agents. If you want to know why we were in the bottom half of the league for so long, it's because past front offices were unable to find talent in the draft.

2008
1 1 (1) Jake Long T Michigan - Starter
2 1 (32) Phillip Merling DE Clemson - Starter
2 26 (57) Chad Henne QB Michigan 3 3 (66) - Starter
3 3 (66) Kendall Langford DE Hampton 4 11 (110) - Starter
4 11 (110) Shawn Murphy G Utah State 6 10 (176) - Gone
6 10 (176) Jalen Parmele RB Toledo 6 29 (195) - Gone
6 29 (195) Donald Thomas G Connecticut 6* 38 (204) - Starter
6* 38 (204) Lex Hilliard FB Montana 7* 38 (245) - On Team
7* 38 (245) Lionel Dotson DT Arizona - On Team

Now just look at the 2008 draft. 7 of 9 players are still on the team, and of those 7 there are 5 who have been or currently are starters. So in only one draft, we've got just as many starters from the 2008 draft as we did in the prior 5 years! I'm leaving the 2009 draft out because of how current it happened, but odds are there will be several more long time starters out of that draft as well.

How about putting 2009 up there too?

this means nothing, of course a new FO is going to clean out the roster and field their own team

Yeah...this is kind of simplistic analysis. I think the fact that they are gone from the team means little....how many are out of football is a better way to look at it. I would also add that going back to 2003 is more than a little unfair as well when you consider the average length of a career in the NFL. Finally, if you jettison a bunch of players...somebody has to make the roster in their place. I do agree that the team is getting better and at least is drafting some fairly solid, if often unspectacular, players.

Our defense better jump about 10 spots with all the focus we gave it in free agency and the last two drafts.

I think Sean Smith qualifies as a starter... he started all 16 games last season. I think Brian Hartline is probably considered a starter, considering he's likely No.2 as of now.

This group also brought in Davone Bess, who's not listed in the 2008 Draft Class, but is a top contributor none the less. Same could also be said for Cam Wake in 2009.

Hartline will start opposite Marshall. Bess will be our slot guy and rotate as the #2 with Hartline.

Yes but would you not agree that if we had drafted more quality starters then we would have more guys from those drafts still on the roster?
If we had been more successful and drafted more guys like Ronnie Brown and Vernon Carey, and less guys like Ted Ginn Jr. and Jason Allen, then maybe we wouldn't be where we are now?
I was merely trying to point out that if you look at the previous drafts, we weren't getting the number of starters that we should have.

Camarillo, my friend. A year of rehab on that ACL and this guy will be back to 11 catch games.

Well, the next one he gets is going to be his 2nd career double digit catch game, but I agree with you're point.

I do think that Hartline and Bess will get more playing time in 2 WR sets than Cam though.
