Pennington not placed on Dolphins' PUP list

DAVIE — The Miami Dolphins did not place veteran quarterback Chad Pennington on the physically-unable-to-perform list after all.
Pennington, who is 10 months into rehabbing his third surgical procedure to his throwing shoulder, sparingly threw passes during the Dolphins offseason minicamps and training sessions, but it appears he's ready to get in the mix.
"Chad is ready to go," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. "Chad right now is competing for [a] backup job."
Tyler Thigen and Pat White are competing to become Henne's primary backup according to Sparano. That competition will likely limit Pennington's practice repetitions.
The Dolphins have never carried four quarterbacks on the team's 53-man roster during Sparano's tenure.
If Pennington began the regular season on the PUP list he wouldn't count against the 53-man roster. But he wouldn't be able to practice with the team during camp, or play in any of the four exhibition games unless he was removed from the PUP list before training camp concluded.
He also wouldn't be able to play until Week 7. But that move could have allowed the Dolphins to carry four quarterbacks until then. An injured or rehabbing player who doesn't begin camp on the PUP list can only be placed on injured reserve from this point, which means he'd be ineligible to play the rest of the season.
