Give the Dolphins an F-- on this free agent acquisition.

Source: Raiders try out center Jake Grove

The National Football Post Nov 3, 7:05 am EDT

The Oakland Raiders tried out a familiar face Tuesday, auditioning former starting center Jake Grove(notes), according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Grove signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent last year after being drafted in the second round by the Raiders out of Virginia Tech in 2004.

Cut by the Dolphins on Sept. 9, Grove has been trying out for teams.

He tried out for the Baltimore Ravens recently, but wasn't signed.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound former consensus All-American adn Rimington Trophy award winner didn't live up to expectations with the Dolphins after signing a five-year, $29 million contract on March 2, 2009 that included $14.5 million in guaranteed money.

Grove has started 56 career games in six NFL seasons.

F is harsh. He's a really good player. He's just too injury prone. Shame, because at this point last year Jake Grove was much better than what we have now.

Where we miss Grove is in the running game. It's been tough sledding for Ricky and Ronnie this season up the middle. Berger has held his own and does a great job in the passing game though. I expect we'll draft a center at some point to add depth or replace Berger if he doesn't live up to our coaches expectations.

I agree that with Grove here, the running game was more effective between the tackles.

When healthy, Grove graded out very well at center. Unfortunately, you have to start that sentence with "when healthy"...

Yep, last year we struggled with injuries. Grove could have been a great center for us but it just didn't play out that way. It's unfortunate. I wonder if our staff sees Berger as a permanent fixture on that line?

I liked Grove while on the field. I am hopeful that we can address the center position in the draft with an heir-apparent.

What surprises me is that no team will take a chance on Grove even as a backup for the remainder of the season.
