Post Dolphins Wrap: Is this team in panic mode?
Quote:
by: Omar Kelly November 11th, 2010 | 9:01 AM The glass that encased Chad Pennington, the one that warned “Break in Case of emergency,” has been shattered.
The coaches are rushing Phillip Merling, the projected starting right end during the summer, back from an Achilles injury that was supposed to sideline him for the full season. The goal is to at least get a month out of the team’s 2008 second-round pick.
Al Harris, a 35-year old cornerback with a recently reconstructed knee, was signed to cushion a number of injuries the Dolphins’ secondary is nursing, taking Jason Allen’s roster spot.
And the Dolphins claimed an offensive lineman from the 49ers practice squad, swapping him out with another offensive tackle (Patrick Brown) who couldn’t sniff the game day roster.
Most of these moves, if not all, reek of desperation, which is one of the things Dave Hyde points out in his column.
There’s a good reason for that considering this regime, and this team, fully believe they are a playoff caliber team. Actually, they believe they are a Super Bowl caliber team, and sold that belief to owner Steve Ross.

At the root of all the moves made this week is Miami’s push to get to the playoffs, which smart money says will take a 6-2 finish and some luck.
The journey starts this week against Tennessee, which unwrapped new receiver Randy Moss on Wednesday, and is nursing Vince Young back to health. Young, the Titans starting quarterback, is bothered by an ankle injury.
The Dolphins can’t afford to stumble out the gate, especially with Thursday night’s game against Chicago looming, so Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano are doing WHATEVER necessary to jump start this team.
Starting Pennington makes sense because he’s a 11-year veteran who is the most accurate quarterback in NFL history. He’ll help Sparano understand whether it’s the play calling or the trigger-man that’s the issue.
Henne will continue to work with Pennington, his mentor, and it’s very likely he’ll get another opportunity to start again this season. If he can’t pick himself up, and put himself back together after his first-ever demotion, then he wasn’t starter worthy because good quarterbacks are resilient.

The quick answer is yes, complete panic mode. I believe this would happen with most first time coaches and their staff when the heat is on. They are doing something just for the sake of doing something.

These recent moves are 100% panic mode. Bringing a 36 year old DB, putting Pennington back in, Rushing Merling. Sparano must be feeling the heat and has switched to the win now at all cost mentality. I do think Pennington will be quicker with his decisions and throw less interceptions but I view this as a major step backward for the organizations future. Sparano's future is tied to right now.

I hope this move blows up in his face, then I hope Sparano is fired with Henning. This move is bush league. Get us a freaking real coach, Ross!!

Panic mode, yes. However, I think the panic was likely induced by ownership who told the coaching staff that nothing less than a playoff appearance is acceptable. The Parcells era is coming to an ignominious end and we are in for yet another rebuild. Please God, please let Bill Cowher be the man....

Well, we already had an over the hill team, I guess we'll call ours the Clutch Crutches.

Yeap, we need a Super Bowl winning coach who has gotten use to sitting in a studio, going home every night to come back to coaching.

For some odd reason I feel like Miami has already tried that.

Parcells has never been the coach....I think Cowher would be successful in a return to coaching.

The track record of coaches who have scaled the game's highest summit and then went on to work for other NFL franchises does not spawn some sort of murky debate. It's clear cut. The coaching magic that won a Super Bowl has never been rekindled to the same degree in a subsequent stop. Eleven NFL head coaches have won at least one Super Bowl ring and gone on to coach another team, multiple teams, or in one case, had a second coaching stint with their original team. None have won a Super Bowl as the head coach of any other team. That's 0-for-11 over a span of 40 years if you're scoring at home. (See chart at bottom of page.)

Was not referring to Parcells. JJ ring a bell?

Not sure what you are basing your assumption on, since no SB winning coach who has removed himself from the game simply because he wanted to take some time off has ever come back to find success.

Cowher is done, but will come back one day for the money, but the heart & fire will be gone. He is use to going home every night & relaxing. When the going gets tough he will not be able to turn it back on because he will long for the days of taking it easy.

Add to the fact he will want personal control which is something he has never had.

Miami needs to find that young guy who is brash & able to bring his testicles with him when he crosses the FL state line.

The #1 team is the Bucs and they get gashed. They can't even comapete with the Steelers while we can. Interesting...

Panthers are listed as the youngest team in the NFL. But the Bucs are up there.

The big dog (local Tampabay) said the Bucs were the yougest. Either way, we are doing better than them both. Funny, a play there and a play there we could be either 7-1 or 1-7. Crazy league.
