Earlier today, we ran a link to an item regarding quarterback Chad Pennington‘s salary increase resulting from his elevation back to the starting role.
As explained by the Palm Beach Post, Pennington’s “2010 salary will jump from $2.5 million to $5.75 million now that he’s a starter.”
Per a league source, that’s not accurate. It would have been accurate, if Pennington had been the starter from Week One.
Pennington’s contract contains two roster bonuses. One is worth $2.6 million. And the other is worth $600,000. Each one is paid out in $200,000 increments, based on games in which he plays at least one play.
It’s unclear whether the roster bonuses are concurrent or consecutive. It’s possible that he’ll get $400,000 for the first each of the first three games in which he plays at least one play, and then $200,000 for the next ten.
If Pennington plays at least one play in each of the final eight games, he’ll get at least an extra $1.6 million. He possibly will receive as much as an extra $2.2 million.
But he won’t get $5.75 million.
At this stage of his career, we have a feeling he’s not complaining about that.
