Dolphin Digest editor Andy Cohen takes a look at Davone Bess and wonders: Can we now move past the Wes Welker trade?

So many impressive performances against Oakland. Chad Henne’s best game of the season. The return of the running game. A dominating rushing defense. Controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides. All important. All worth savoring.

But every time I start thinking about all those positives, I keep coming back to one player.

Davone Bess.

Was this kid special against the Raiders, or what?

Consider all the variables.

•Brandon Marshall was left home nursing a hamstring injury.
•Bess grew up almost in the shadow of the stadium.
•The pressure was clearly on because the Dolphins needed a difference-maker in the passing game.
•Two 5-5 teams gripping tightly to their playoff hopes. The stakes couldn’t have been much higher.

And Bess was at his Bess.

We’ve heard for years how the Dolphins blew it by trading Wes Welker to the Patriots. We had heard how they gave up too much and got far too little in return. But let’s move on from that. Let’s instead focus on Davone Bess who may very well be just as talented, and definitely more explosive, than Wes Welker.

By now, it should be obvious that this undrafted player out of Hawaii is the real deal. Start a checklist. It’s all there.

Quickness.

Toughness.

Intelligence.

Great hands.

Durability.

We saw it all against the Raiders in what was probably his best game as a pro. Every one of his six catches had meaning. Every one of his 111 receiving yards had importance. He always seemed to be in the right place at precisely the right moment.

How about his 47-yard punt return?

first of all lets not forget that we weren't the only bonehead team to trade welker. San Diego was the first.

Secondly, Bess shouldn't be compared to Welker. The comparison stops at the position. They actually are totally different players with comparatively the same results.

at least Bess is a whole lot younger than Welk
We should get many years of productivity from him.

historically no, but lately, yeah, he has been. ever since moss left the patsies he hasn't been the same player. not saying that he sucks now, but he's just not as relevant as guys like gkowski and branch

San Diego never traded Welker. And how are Bess and Welker two totally different players?

Both return kicks, and are slot receivers under 6'0"

Welker was a RFA & NE was going to sign him to a contract with a poison pill in it, before the trade. Miami actually would have only gotten a 2nd for him had that happened.

exactly, and he wouldnt have put those kinda numbers up in Miami.
He was only tearing up the league when Moss was drawing all the coverage away.

I've been saying it since his rookie year - this guy has a very bright future ahead of him, I can see him being just as productive if not more than Welker. The only difference that stands out to me is Welker's attitude. He plays tough and just looks mean, Bess seems more relaxed and natural out there.
