Post Commentary: Dolphins' tackle Jake Long may be hurting, but
DAVIE — The guy's father punched in and out for three decades at General Motors as a foundry man turning metals into liquids and liquids into molds and molds into auto parts.

"It's hard work," the son said. "I never heard him complain."

The guy's mother tended a deli for years, seeing to it that the customers were satisfied.

"It could get pretty busy," the son said, "and she did whatever needed to be done."

Now you know where Dolphins offensive tackle Jake Long gets it. Now you can pinpoint the wellspring of his quiet resolve and fierce pride taken in honest effort.

"My parents," Long said, "set a good example that way."

So, he works.

Miami made Long the first overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, and he has made the Pro Bowl twice in two years. He has an excellent chance to make it for a third time this season. Long has started every game since becoming a pro, and will be on the line Sunday against Cleveland despite playing these days with a left shoulder injured against Tennessee a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it was a dislocation. Maybe there is labrum damage. Maybe surgery will be required.

The Dolphins aren't saying. Neither is Long, who figures it all will get sorted out eventually.

"It's not crazy pain or anything," Long said. "It doesn't hurt all the time."
