Offseason Outlooks: Miami Dolphins

The Fantasy Source staff continues to examine the Offseason Outlooks for each NFL team with a look at the Miami Dolphins

Who's hot?
QB: Chad Henne. We're not ready to decree the phrase "Next Marino" yet, but the Dolphins have found a long-term answer at quarterback. Henne averaged 273.2 passing ypg. in Miami's last five games, and that included three 300-yard outings. Henne has a big-time arm, but he also has a tendency to hold on to the ball too long. Henne had three TDs against six interceptions in Miami's last four games. In time, he could be a Phil Simms-like quarterback, which is exactly what Bill Parcells wants, we think. Henne should be a safe option as a backup QB in 2010, especially if Miami brings in a big-time receiver.More on that in a bit.

Dolphins RBs. Coach Tony Sparano has used the tag-team of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams to the max over the past two seasons. Brown and Williams combined for 1,769 rushing yards and 19 TDs in 2009 after racking up 1,575 yards and 14 TDs in '08. Factor in the two-year receiving totals (835 yards, 3 TDs), and it's clear RB is king in this offense. Brown is injury prone and Williams is aging, but it's not a bad idea to package these two backs in 2010. Chances are both will have some level of success running behind book-end tackles Jake Long and Vernon Carey.

Who's not?
Dolphins receivers. Here's a rundown of Miami's last four season leaders in receiving yardage. Davone Bess ('09, 758 yards, 2 TDs); Ted Ginn Jr. ('08, 790 yards, 2 TDs); Marty Booker ('07, 556 yards, 1 TD); Wes Welker ('06, 687 yards, 1 TD). Chris Chambers was the team's last 1,000-yard receiver with a breakout '05 (1,118 yards, 11 TDs). What would Henne give to have Welker and Chambers now? Ginn, Bess and Greg Camarillo each had one 100-yard game last season. Brian Hartline is an up-and-comer, but none of these receivers are every-week fantasy plays. Hence the need for a big-time receiver.

Defense/special teams. This aging group couldn't stop the pass, gave up too many points and struggled against the run toward the end of last season. Can Parcells and Sparano fix all of that against a brutal schedule that features six road games against playoff teams? It's not going to be easy. Miami continues to pile up decent sack totals (44), and they had three interceptions in three of their last five games. Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, both rookies last season, will form one of the league's best cornerback tandems in time. That's just it, however. The front seven is running out of time.

Who's hurt?
Brown (Lisfranc fracture) is coming off his second season-ending injury in three seasons. He has missed 16 games in that span, and he has never played in all 16 games. Carey had off-season knee surgery, but should be ready for the preseason.

Who has contract issues?
Joey Porter isn't happy, which should come as a surprise to nobody. He might be talking his way out of Miami. Jason Taylor could return for a 15th season, but he likely won't be playing in Miami. Same goes for Jason Ferguson. With all of these possible defections, Miami very well could load up on defense in the 2010 NFL Draft. Chad Pennington wants a starting job, but it likely won't be waiting for him in Miami. ... page_break

Ronnie played 16 games in 2008....

IDK how special teams is much of an issue. I guess a return man can be brought in, but our coverage was real good for most of the season.
