Figured that was the next axe to fall.

BenVolinPBP #Dolphins save another $3.2m by cutting Kevin Burnett, on top of $3.9m saved on Dansby. Savings used to pay for Wheeler & Ellerbe

So essentially we revamped our linebackers without impacting the cap much. The only contract that will eat into our cap space is Mike Wallace's.

And Burnett was going to cost $7 million in 2014. This means our cap number for 2014 is $59 million... without including Wallace, Ellerbe, Wheeler and Clemons.

Wow, good to see that the coaches see what we have seen all year. TE's and slants eating our LBs up.

Ellerbe is worse in pass coverage than Burnett/Dansby, by a lot to.

I can't think of a game last year where either Burnett or Dansby dominated. They were both mediocre pedestrian LB's that cost a ton of $.

Wow, I guess stats don't lie, but I remember screeming at the TV to stop this 3rd down and boom...anouncer says another 3rd down converted on the fins. lol Seeing that the Pats are the slant kings, Elbert must of done OK since they dominated the 2nd half.

yup, not sure Ellerbe and Wheeler are greater than Dansby and Burnett.

To snare a starting linebacker from the Superbowl champion Ravens who desperately wanted Dannell back says something to me & it is obvious that Miami wanted to get younger and faster. It looks very promising as Wheeler is another one that can get after it too.

Dansby and Burnett did not have a terrible year last season, but you could also see their deficiencies and that is side to side coverages and down field guarding of the tight ends.

Let's hope that this change will be for the best!!

When I look at it from the $ perspective its hard to be too upset for me. I like Burnett, thought he was a good LB and carried himself well. Dansby was a lot like Porter, all talk with a few shining moments, his mouth and contract exceeded anything he has done on the field, and he turned down a restructure so I am glad he is gone.

20 mil is space for the future is great. Who knows what the future holds, so I like that our FO (Ireland?) appears to be planning for the future while still building for this year.
Problem with all of the "rebuilds" is they over spend for fast results and if they dont happen the mess is left for the next regime..
Right now they have done a great job clearing the mess while making the team better.

This is chess, not checkers. Dansby and Burnett were going to cost $20 million next season, they were already costing $15 million this season. Ellerbe and Wheeler will cost less than half of that.

The Dolphins go into day 2 of free agency with $20 million left to spend. And with Dmitri Patterson and Richard Marshall still under contract, there is another $9 million there to remove off the books.

Also, keep in mind that you can roll over any cap space you have left to next season. If Ellerbe and Wheeler can be as effective as Dansby (who never made big plays) and Burnett (who couldn't cover a 10 year old), this is one of the best series of moves in the offseason for now and for the future.
