 Update on TE Dustin Keller
Quote: The Dolphins "missed" on tight end Jared Cook on Tuesday, if you call not wanting to pay $7 million per year to a player who had exactly three receptions more than Anthony Fasano a miss. Alright, I understand the infatuation with Cook but that sure is a lot of money for speed and seam-threat potential. The Dolphins thought they had Cook at one point the past three days, I'm told. Then the Rams put on the full-court press, which is defined as money, money, money. Fine, the Dolphins are moving on. Today, Dustin Keller is visiting with the team, as I reported this morning. Well, more specifically the club plans to give Keller its own kind of full-court press. There will be meetings with coaches, dining with club personnel, and the physical. The physical, which I'm told was taking place this afternoon, is key. Keller missed a lot of games last year with hamstring and ankle injuries. He had, however, played 64 consecutive games prior to that. So the thinking here is if Keller is healthy and his physical checks out, then the Dolphins and his agent will be able to begin discussing contract terms. The Dolphins are also expecting a visit today from wide receiver Brandon Gibson, late of the Rams. Gibson visited the Jets Wednesday morning but left town without a contract. He was flying to South Florida to visit Miami next, according to a source who confirmed various media reports. Keller, by the way, has shown an ability to be quarterback friendly -- that is, he finds a way to be in place to get his quarterback out of a tough situation. No, he's not running a 4.49 in the 40 like Cook or maybe Vernon Davis. No, he's not going to block out the sun. But he's efficient. He's been solid. He's played in big games, including two AFC Championship games. He would help Miami's cause if the Dolphins pull the trigger. What will it cost? A lot less than $7 million per season. Maybe half that. Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins ... rylink=cpy

Keller would be an instant upgrade over any tight end on the roster last season.

Plus everyone knows that the Phins have a ton of cash to spend. No way is he going to be cheap.

Re: Update on TE Dustin Keller
Ireland let Cook go over money, he will let Keller go as well...
However I think he comes here, so long as we make a competitive offer. And I want him to come here and have a HOF career so the Jet fans fan cry over it like Fins fans still do over Welker lol...

The money can be used for a number of positions. Having those kind of options keep you from being screwed. It's a good thing

Re: Update on TE Dustin Keller
Man honestly I would've rather had Martellus Bennett, but he was dead set on the Bears. Cook had some intriquing athletic abilities ..... but Keller strikes me as a tweener. I'd rather wait on Finley's status before going after him.
We currently don't really have any in-line blockers and I'd prefer Ireland to do something in the draft to get a guy who can both block and catch.

Heck.....I would rather they draft Eifert. The Dolphins are actually looking very good this off season. It has been a shock...I am not used to seeing Miami make so many moves that look this good. Sad to see Bush go, but not surprised. I still think the team would have been better with him on the roster, but there are a lot of holes to fill and freeing up money for the future is important too.

I agree, Bennett would have been a perfect fit (Sherman/A&M Connection). Bennett is a well-rounded similar to Fasano, but with better athletic ability. Keller while a slight improvement in the passing game, he is a step back from Fasano in the blocking department, something we badly need. I too agree that if we land Keller, we should definitely seek out an in-line blocker who can work in the redzone. Do you know if Kevin Boss has signed with anyone yet or if he's healthy now? He'd be a great complimentary TE to work with Keller if he's available for cheap.

I've read a few posts/tweets from people claiming Fasano's blocking was highly overrated. Can't argue against his TD production.

I would welcome Keller signing with the phins. Give our young QB as many weapons as possible in the passing game and I think he will be very successful.

Fasano's run blocking rated negatively according to PFF. He was the 31st ranked tight end at run blocking in the NFL according to their metrics. In 2011 he was 5th, so he really declined.

I was eluding to the fact that in the redzone and as a pass blocker Fasano is every bit as good as Keller, possibly better. Where Keller gets the nod in my opinion is between the 20s. I guess I should have re-phrased my comment. I see your point Rich. You'd be 100% correct in saying Keller is a much bigger factor in the passing game in terms of his skills as a route runner and as someone who can move the chains.

Re: Update on TE Dustin Keller
ArmandoSalguero No news to report on Dustin Keller. He's neither in nor out, according to source. "Still too early," is text I got.
This is taking really long. Phyical, dinner, contract terms... obviously they're disagreeing on something.

I like Clay, but I would hate to only have Clay, Egnew, and a rookie for TEs.
Fred Davis is an upgrade ove Fasano, and certainly an upgrade over an empty spot.

Cook has done enough to warrant the contract he got, and Keller is coming off a year where he missed more than half of the season.

Yeah Im sure.. Fasano got 4 a yr with 11 gar, he was the first TE signed and in 16 games he barely beat Keller's stats in 8... Kinda puts things in perspective when the Jets TE that missed half a season had literally 20 less yards than our TE who started 16 games....

Re: Update on TE Dustin Keller
Saw it tweeted from Rich Cimini I believe that Keller asked for Cook money and said he wants more than the Bennett contract.
Given his age and recent injuries I don't think Miami is going to go for it unless he accepts something between Bennett and Fasano.
I didn't expect it before, but perhaps Ertz, Eifert or Escobar are on the radar unless Miami gets a bargain.
