Free Agent: Brent Grimes

Measureables

Position: CB
Born: 07/19/1983, in Philadelphia, PA
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 183
College: Shippensburg
Rookie Year: 2006

Former Team: Atlanta Falcons

To address one of their biggest remaining needs, the Dolphins have acquired former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes. Grimes is coming off a ruptured Achilles so the move comes with some risk. But the Dolphins inked him to a 1 year, $5.5 million deal.

If healthy, Grimes is an immediate and significant upgrade over any cornerback the Dolphins had last year. He is excellent in zone coverage and despite his size, has the vertical to attack the ball high in the air against bigger receivers.

Grimes was rated the 3rd best cornerback in 2011 by PFF behind Darrelle Revis and Cortland Finnegan. In 2010, he rated 10th.

The receiver Grimes was covering was targetted 56 times in 2011. He allowed 25 receptions for 258 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT with 12 passes defensed. Grimes allowed a QB rating of 62.9.

By comparison, Miami's best corner last season was Sean Smith, who was targetted 113 times and allowed 62 receptions for 732 yards, 6 TDs and 2 INTs with 8 passes defensed and a QB rating of 85.1.

Here is a week by week analysis of Grimes' 2011 performance.

I love this move! If Grimes bounces back from this Achilles injury and plays well Miami would be wise to extend him before the offseason.

And if he doesn't, no harm no foul. It's a great deal for Miami. If he pans out, phenomenal. If he doesn't, we didn't lose anything by trying.
