In addition to working at cornerback, Grimes fielded punts at practice and he was joined for the occasion by wide receiver Brian Hartline.
Neither Grimes nor Hartline has returned punts in the NFL, but both did it in college. Hartline, in fact, was quick to point out after practice that he holds the Ohio State school record — he had a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown against Kent State as a sophomore in 2007.
Marcus Thigpen handled both punt and kickoff return duties for the Dolphins in 2012, although Davone Bess also was used on punt returns. With Bess having been traded to Cleveland during the draft, the Dolphins could be looking for somebody else to complement Thigpen.
On offense, Will Yeatman lined up at guard Tuesday after working all of last season at offensive tackle. Yeatman came to the Dolphins in 2011 as a tight end before being converted to tackle last season.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets reps at different spots at different times,” Philbin said. “We certainly want him to compete for a starting job if he’s one of the five best guys. If he’s not, possibly that versatility helps a guy keep a job in the offensive line in the NFL.”
