Post Day 3 Afternoon practice report
-- Top Dolphins performers for day 3: 1. FS Chris Clemons, a pick 6. 2. LB Dannell Ellerbe, INT & pressures. 3. DT Vaughn Martin, Dominant day.

-- Jimmy Wilson said according to the Dolphins coaches the defense dropped 17 picks last year. "We could have been tops in the league."

-- "Two years ago we weren't good with communication and got beat with a lot of stop and gos, and a lot of passes over our head," Wilson said.

-- "I laid my foundation last year, and now i'm just building off it," Oliver Vernon on his second season.

-- "They are very athletic. They were brought in here to make plays and that's what they're going to do," Odrick on Ellerbe and Wheeler.

-- "He's got a lot of great moves. He plays with good leverage, he stays low," Jared Odrick on Olivier Vernon.

-- "It is a part of the game. Whenever you're picked wherever you always feel pressure to contribute," Jared Odrick on Dion Jordan.

-- "He's very efficient as a player. He's played so much football he knows what works for him," Philbin on Tyson Clabo.

-- "They are slippery guys. They have good movement. And the other part to it is timing," Philbin said of LBers like Wheeler Ellerbe blitzing.

-- "We've got to get ready for the scrimmage. Today we'll have some. Tomorrow we'll have a little more (contact)," Philbin said.

-- "When you get on the football field everyone is equal....You've got to earn your keep," Philbin said of expectations for Dion Jordan.

-- "We're teaching him the system, getting him acclimated to the scheme, teaching him the fundamentals," Philbin said of Dion Jordan.

-- "For our first day in pads. We had a very productive practice....Glad to see we had some take aways on defense," Philbin said.

-- "He's very elusive. Quick off the ball and has good hands," Reshad Jones said of Brandon Gibson.

-- "We've got a lot more speed. We're younger and faster," Reshad Jones said.

-- Will Davis just broke up a Tannehill pass. Two deflections on the day for the rookie. His best practice so far.

-- Mike Wallace just caught a nice slant from Tannehill.

-- Emeka Onyenekwu tackles Marcus Thigpen for a loss on a running play. He came right up the gut.

-- Julian Posey broke up a Pat Devlin pass to Jeff Fuller. Fuller should have brought it in. Deflection was more of a drop than breakup.

-- Jimmy Wilson picked off a Matt Moore pass intended for Armon Binns.

-- Cameron Wake and Derrick Shelby just forced Tannehill to throw the ball away on a jailhouse blitz. Someone was getting sacked.

-- Brent Grimes just broke up a come back pass from Tannehill to Mike Wallace.

-- It appears TE Dion Sims is the first rookie to get a call up to the 1st and 2nd unit.

-- DE Olivier Vernon just blew by LT Jonathan Martin in 1-on-1 drill. Vernon continues to impress.

-- Dannell Ellerbe just picked off Tannehill during 7-on-7. Wasn't pretty. Stepped right in front of Tannehill's target.

-- Phillip Wheeler would have sacked Tannehill on a LBER blitz. These O-linemen are confused about who is coming, who is dropping back.

-- Dan Carpenter misses a 53-yard FG left.

-- Just saw Josh Samuda put Tracy Robertson on his butt.

-- Vaughn Martin gets a would-be sack of Matt Moore. He follows it up by tipping Moore's pass at the line of scrimmage on the next play.

-- Will Davis deflects a Matt Moore pass to Armon Binns. Diving deflection.

-- Daniel Thomas just had a powerful 5-yard run to the left. Not much Lamar Miller today.

-- Dion Jordan is practicing, but he is NOT doing any work that involves contact right now. Stay tuned.

-- The Dolphins are wearing pads today.

-- Joe Philbin watching OL vs. DL 1-on-1 drills right now. He's watching very closely.

-- Mike Wallace just caught a 15-yard come back from Tannehill during 7-on-7. Nolan Carroll on the coverage.

-- Brandon Gibson goes into motion and catches a short pass on Richard Marshall. This battle is getting interesting.

-- Tannehill just threaded the needle to Armon Binns on an out during 7-on-7.

-- Dannell Ellerbe knocks down a Tannehill pass intended for Daniel Thomas.

-- Mike Wallace just dropped a Tannehill pass during 7-on-7.

-- Paul Soliai blew up a Daniel Thomas run in the backfield during the 2nd 11-on-11 session.

-- Backup center Josh Samuda is not wearing a compression sleeve on his left leg.

-- Jordan Kovac just picked off Pat Devlin during 7-on-7.

-- Reshad Jones sacked Tannehill on a safety blitz for his final 11-on-11 snap. Defense dominates the scrimmage situation.

-- Defense doing lots of blitzing. Lots. Offense struggling to keep up.

-- Tannehill's second pass is deflected at the line of scrimmage. Dannell Ellerbe's blitz rushed the throw.

-- Wow. Odrick just shed block by Keller by tossing him aside. Impressive.

-- Matt Moore picks up the safety blitz and completes a hot read to Michael Egnew, who gets stripped by a linebacker. FUMBLE. D recovers.

-- Lance Louis has begun to practice without his knee brace. Now can he get some more reps?

-- Dallas Thomas has a pretty good get off for an OT. Now I see why he played OG as a senior at Tennessee.

-- Lamar Miller no longer has a special team assignment (featured back status) so during those drills he's working with his position coach.

-- Dan Carpenter made his first field goal and then split the uprights on a 52-yarder, which had room to spare.

-- Dustin Keller and Michael Egnew are the two tight ends playing together. Egnew just caught a pass from Tannehill during 11-on-11s.

-- Daniel Thomas, who is the third down back, catches a screen pass from Matt Moore.

-- Mike Wallace is WIDE open for a 30-yard reception from Ryan Tannehill. Someone blew a coverage.

-- Richard Marshall just broke up a Tannehill pass to Brian Hartline.

-- Dion Jordan has pads and a helmet on. He's doing pre-practice work. Looks like he's working today.

-- Kool & The Gangs "Get Down On It" song No. 2 of Dolphins practice. Waiting to see Joe Philbin dance.

-- Coltford's "Drivin Around Song" is the first song of day one. Diversity for the Dolphins.

-- Most of you saw Dion Jordan's new hair. Emeka Onyenekwu has half his hair dyed blonde. Split right down the middle.

-- Dolphins DT Tracy Robertson, who is 6-4, 300 pounds, is being used as a backup DE on the 2nd team line. Likely until Dion Jordan is cleared.

-- Rookie Keelan Johnson is a free safety on the JV defense and fellow rookies Jordan Kovacs and Don Jones are the strong safety.

-- Jimmy Wilson is indeed the free safety and Kelcie McCray is the strong safety. However, Dolphins WANT interchangeable safeties.

-- It will be interesting to see if Joe Philbin watches the JV unit during the team's first padded practice. He's watched JV the past 2 days.

-- Dolphins rookie CB Jamar Taylor, who has been nursing a groin injury since OTAs, is sidelined during practice 3. Possible setback.

I know it's practice, but the turnovers and the LBs are impressing me.

Sure is a good thing we traded up for a DE, seems that position really needed help above all others

The turnovers and lack of TDs are depressing me. Hopefully the offense responds with a big performance tomorrow.
