Post Day 4 early practice notes

Today is a Caleb Sturgis kicking day. He's probably kicked 1/3 of the attempts Dan Carpenter has had. We'll see if they even out.

"Jump Around" by House of Pain is song No. 2.

Tim McGraw's "How Bad Do You Want It" is song No. 1 of practice.

Fumble drill, where the tailback has to hold onto two balls, and Lamar Miller coughs one up.

Jared Odrick and Randy Starks are indeed rotating their starting days. But. Both players are package based. One package they work together.

Caleb Sturgis just made a 39-yard field goal.

Caleb Sturgis just missed his second field goal, which was a 48-yarder. NOW he's clearly behind Dan Carpenter.

Caleb Sturgis just missed his 2nd field goal. It was in the 48-49 yard range. Not sure.

Derrick Shelby takes Matt Moore down for a sack.

Dion Jordan is working special teams today.

The Dolphins tailbacks are working on their blocking technique.

why is Sturgis all of a sudden missing so many field goals?
He should be wiping the floor with Carpenter.

Running back Daniel Thomas, who said he’s not conceding his job to Lamar Thomas, barreled his way into the end zone on a hard run.

- Brian Hartline, who had just one touchdown reception last year despite a 1,000 yard season, made a diving catch in the end zone off a Matt Moore pass.

- Receiver Armon Binns is continuing to make catches and looks like someone who will contribute this season.

...

Mike Wallace, slot receiver: Wallace said he expects to see time as a slot receiver this year, something he rarely experienced in Pittsburgh.

“I think I will be inside a little bit more,” Wallace said. “I think out here, (Offensive Coordinator Mike) Sherman really wants to switch us around a lot more and have us where people can’t key in on you.”

Keller likes Tannehill: After practice, tight end Dustin Keller praised Tannehill, saying “there’s no question in my mind he can be one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.”

“His decision-making, his poise in the pocket and his leadership in the huddle,” said Keller of Tannehill’s attributes. “He’s not going to be a guy who’s out there yelling and saying a whole bunch, but when he does talk you know he means it. It’s important.”

During a lull in the post-practice media scrum, NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp held court with his media brethren. His enthusiasm for what the Miami Dolphins are capable of this season was palatable. ...

When Sapp was asked directly if he thought the Dolphins could challenge the New England Patriots for the AFC East crown he quickly nodded his head in agreement and said, “Of course.”
...

Miami’s defense ranked first in the league in Red Zone and the offense ranked 13th so Philbin said some high standards have been set. … Hartline made the first touchdown catch in 11-on-11 drills this morning with a diving reception in the right corner of the end zone on a ball thrown by Matt Moore. Ryan Tannehill also connected with Rishard Matthews for a score in traffic and Pat Devlin found tight end Michael Egnew for six points. … Fullback Jorvorskie Lane and running back Marcus Thigpen each made one-handed catches during 7-on-7s. …

Tim McGraw? Lol, really? Not the type of crowd you would think kicked it to country.

Carpenter's a very good kicker.........He had a two game slump last year, but he rebounded nicely. The Phins are hoping to save $$. Sturgis may get the benefit of the doubt in a close competition.......but he'll be gone if he continues to struggle.

but he's pretty worthless from 50+ yards.
the best kickers are the one's that give you a shot to win from 53, 55, 57 yards out.

It will be interesting to see if Carpenter does enough to keep his job.
