DAVIE —

Receiver Rishard Matthews had known for a couple of days that he would be returning to practice Sunday, so when the morning arrived, you could say he couldn’t wait to get going.

“Up early and excited about the day,” he tweeted at 7 a.m. “Everyone enjoy.”

Matthews had missed two weeks with an undisclosed injury but returned and made one of the day’s highlight plays, catching a long sideline pass from Ryan Tannehill that drew cheers from fans.

“I feel good,” Matthews said. “I’ve been out for about two weeks. I feel like I kind of missed a step, but everybody said I looked smooth out there running.”

Coach Joe Philbin was satisfied. ...

Matthews, a seventh-round pick in 2012 who had 151 receiving yards last season, is in a group of nine receivers competing for what could be two roster slots behind Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson.

I was hoping he'd get back in the mix. There seem to be a logjam for those 4-6 spots.

1 thru 4
Wallace
Hartline
Gibson
Bumphis

Then we have Matthews, McNutt, Fuller, Pruitt, Tyms and Davis to fight for 1 or 2 spots.
Remember they have Thigpen for WR depth as well.

Lol Bumphis at 4? You seriously couldn't have jumped to that conclusion already. He has shown flashes, but the dude was fully responsible for turnovers in BOTH preseason games he played. That is a massive set back for me. I definitely like his potential slotted around 5-6th, but he needs to stop with the STUPID turnovers, you see that garbage in pee wee.

whatever, he's shown more than any of the other bottom feeder receivers on this team. We need PLAYMAKERS! He can make plays downfield and that's what Philbin is looking for.

You can't have guys on your team that score for the other team.

I happen to agree Bumphis isn't ready for primetime. I think Matthews will quickly re-establish himself as the number 4 guy. McNutt and Tyms both seem to just be hopefuls. McNutt is really fast and you'd like to see him develop some consistency. I like Bumphis's ability to catch in traffic but the turnovers have to stop.

At this point I'm pretty certain the Dolphins will try to claim a 5th WR off the waiver wire than sweat any of these fringe WRs.

I see potential in Marvin McNutt, Chad Bumphis & Brian Tyms. But if Miami cuts them trying to put them on PS & someone claims them, BIG DEAL
