Apparently he scuffled with and/or assaulted an officer/firefighter.

What a knucklehead this guy has suddenly become ...... but then again his behavior is what landed him at Hawaii and not some prestigious college university.

Seems like he's fallen off the deep end since the Dolphins traded him.

Wow..........this guy's gone off the deep end............

"Bess appeared to be under the influence of an unknown narcotic due to his irrational behavior," a deputy wrote in a Broward County sheriff's arrest report. "He appeared to be looking through me when I was talking to him."

Sucks man. Hes obviously going through some serious stuff.

I'm still cheering for the guy, & hoping this situation isn't as cut and dry as it sounds

Man...I read about that this morning. Bummer really. I really liked Bess. When I was down in Florida and went to a game, of course he wasn't playing, but he was out on the field with Dan Campbell before the other players came out, and those 2 seemed to have a great relationship. It was pretty cool to see a coach and player interact like they did. I think he was heartbroken when he got traded and lost his passion for the game.

Too bad. I thought he had straightened up his act at Hawaii. He worked his rear end off here to make the team. Maybe this is why he topped out after a few years with us.

The police report detailing Davone Bess' alleged assault of a Broward sheriff's deputy Friday depicts an unstable, violent man, likely on drugs.

It's the same condition in which authorities discovered Bess, the former Dolphins receiver, in his Cooper City home 10 months earlier -- and the reason his family had him hospitalized against his will.

Six BSO deputies were needed on that night to restrain Bess, who was screaming, "Hide the guns," "Where is my weed," and "I want to get in the end zone; throw me the football," according to the incident report.

Word of this prior meltdown was never made public until now. The Dolphins traded Bess to the Cleveland Browns a month after his hospitalization ...

I am connected to Davone on my Twitter.....unfortunately, I think he is not making good choices and seems to be boastful about different things that in my opinion a professional athlete should NOT be broadcasting and smoking weed is one.

I am sorry he got arrested but this is all about choices and if he wants to blow a great NFL career, then so be it.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported late Friday that Bess has been dealing with personal issues for some time, including insomnia, and was trying to catch a flight back home to seek help.

That jibes with the police report from March 11, 2013, unearthed by The Miami Herald.

On that night, BSO was called to Bess' home. When the first deputy arrived, he observed several large males trying to restrain an agitated Bess. The deputy noted that he smelled a strong smell of cannabis coming from the master bedroom.

Bess was trying to throw the men off him, and was incoherent, according to police. That's when he started screaming about guns and drugs and football. He made no sense, according to police, and even efforts by fire rescue to sedate him were unsuccessful.

Finally, a half-dozen cops were finally able to pin him down. Bess was then Marchman Acted -- or hospitalized without consent. He was taken to Memorial East Hospital for observation.

Earlier in the day, Bess' mother, Chinell Carpenter, flew in from California because she received a call that her son was not acting like himself. She said then that Bess had not slept in three days and was going through some serious personal issues. Carpenter added that Bess had no prior psychiatric history and was on no medication. ...

But he and the coaching staff had a falling out in late 2012, and the Dolphins ultimately traded him to the Browns during draft weekend in 2013. Those close to him say he has since had trouble at home.

...

Davone Bess was sent to psych ward in March

The Miami Herald reports Davone Bess was Baker Acted back in March of 2013. The term Baker Acted means to be hospitalized against one's own will, typically in a mental health institute. The Baker Act in Florida allows police to do this to an individual. Back in March, authorities were called to Bess' Florida home where they found the receiver incoherent and screaming about random things such as guns, drugs, and football while trying to be detained by a half-dozen men. On Friday, Bess was arrested at the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Airport on assault charges. He reportedly broke a coffee mug on a police officer and got into a "fighting stance." The officer said it appeared Bess was under the influence of drugs and seemed to be "staring through" him in the altercation. Bess clearly needs help, and we hope he finds it. He's missed some time the past two seasons due to "personal reasons." Bess' stay in Cleveland is likely over

Sad and perhaps he really does have psychological issues, but I am skeptical and from the outside opinion one would say he has made choices to take some form of drugs to not be in his right mind.

Life is about choices and IMO, he is just not making the right ones. Hope he overcomes his problems though and wish him well.

Not to be outdone, he throws his QB under the bus.

Granted, it could be said that Weeden's awful excuse at QB play could have driven him to smoke weed.

EDIT: Now that I listened to it, I think it sounds more like he thought someone said "Weeden" rather than "weed".

I hope Bess gets his life straightened out. I had hoped he'd do well in Miami and the NFL.
