Post Growing consensus: Egnew won't make it
Quote:
...

I've talked to two players the past three weeks that told me they don't see Egnew, a rookie last year, making it out of training camp next year.

"He should have been cut this year," one told me.

That doesn't account for Egnew learning to block and learning his assignments better and getting stronger and faster this offseason. But another player I spoke with said none of that will ultimately matter with the former third round draft pick.

"He's a p---y," the second player said. "He's not a football player."

Why the hell did they even draft him if they hate him so much?

Given how important a TE is to Philbin's offense they can't afford to screw up that badly in picking their guy.

I'm a big Ertz fan in the draft but they might have to look for someone established to ensure its not a gaping hole again.

I hate to be right on this one, but it was clear who Egnew was at the Sr. Bowl. He's an athlete in shorts and a t-shirt, but not once pads come on.

What's even more concerning is teammates are talking like that about fellow teammates. Who are these guys?

That's not concerning. They speak the truth.

Ya, right.

If it were Ryan Tannehill I highly doubt you'd be saying that. LOL

Could have told you that after watching HKnocks. He had fear in his eyes.

Ireland better hit on that last 3rd for Marshall, but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't see this guy making it. All these blown 2nd and 3rd round picks have hurt the Dolphins rebuilding process.

I can't picture in ANY world Tannehill saying that, I am ruling him out by default. I am sure it was a grunt on ST or a bench warmer who said it, not a team captain.

This shouldn't come as a surprise.........I don't believe he dressed all season. Doubt if there is any trade value for him, so might as well let him show up for training camp..........but if there is not a significant change.......cut him quick. We don't need another busted experimental project like Gates or Wallace.

I think Phins Rock got it, sounds like an Incognito remark.. I withdrawel my statement to cut both in that case, just cut Egnew...

Is it because he is the GM that he gets the blame, or is there some evidence of who wanted who in the Miami draft room?

I recall reading that Philbin was high on Egnew, but dont feel like looking right now...

I just have a hard time believing that Ireland is some egomaniac in the draft room and takes no input from his coaches...

When was the last time you were actually excited by a top Dolphin draft pick.....and I mean one that was impressive in college and backed it up on the field as a rookie.

Marino for me....and Jason Taylor.....but it has been quite awhile......

Because it was a pick we acquired for B-Marsh, whom we never attempted to replace this past year and obviously because of Ireland's shakey drafting record.

And griping about it is going to help us how? My point is that we've know Egnew was a waste for a while...he's not a patience guy. Marshall isn't an answer and he didn't take Chicago to the next step. He would have helped, no question there, but trading him away didn't kill this team in the long run.

We could say that about practically everything that's ever called into question. Alas, this is a forum and we talk about it. I'd rather talk about our own franchise then continue to whine about former coaches or other AFC East teams. LOL

It's not just about B-Marsh. It's about planning and poor draft selection. For a 3rd rounder to bomb as hard as he did this year is a serious miss.

I agree that for a 3rd rounder to bomb this badly (barring injury) makes this a horrible pick. I don't think the planning was that poor.

I'm not as hard on Ireland as some others, but that was a failure on his part. It's his job to find the guys who will shine and avoid those who will bomb. Particularly in the top half of the draft.

Kinda hard to know if Marshall would have or would not have an impact on this team.

this is why we need to double down at tight end. Either 1 in free agency and 1 in the draft, or just take 2 in the draft.

I knew it was gonna be a wasted pick on draft day. Missouri tight ends have no place in the NFL.

(Martin Rucker, Chase Coffman) and now Egnew

Yep, it was a reach. They said on draft day that he would be a project. He may "get it" in the offseason. Nothing to lose sleep over. You really want Ireland to definitely hit on the first 3 rounds and hope for a gem in the later rounds.

Let me clarify to both you and Rock. Its fine to discuss for a brief period, but is Egnew really worth a long conversation? We've griped, Marshall is gone and Miami still doesn't have a receiving threat at TE.

I'd prefer to start talking about who to target rather than continuing to point out how bad Ireland botched the pick. But being the freedom loving Libertarian that I am, you guys can wax poetic about anything your hearts desire.

I am FAR from a draft expert and even I wondered what the heck that pick was about

Well since we are talking draft and draft experts, lets see what they said about Egnew...

Quote:
Mel Kiper Jr.Verified
‏@MelKiperESPN
Missouri TE Michael Egnew may just have the best hands of any TE in the draft, including Stanford's Coby Fleener. He's also fast & athletic.

And Kiper again post draft
Quote:
TE Michael Egnew (third round) _ “He caught the ball very well; his numbers were down (last year) because of the play of his quarterback. But he’s going to get a lot bigger and stronger. He’s going to be 265 (pounds) in a couple of years, with the same ability to catch the ball.”

Everything else I have read seems to be the same about him, projected 3rd rounder, needed to be developed, needed to beef up a bit, and bad at blocking

So this guy is not something surprising to me. It seems he is exactly what everyone said he was, I guess some just expected him to develop faster and make an impact this year....

I am no draft expert either, however Kiper is regarded as one.... If you google his name and draft prospect you will find page upon page of information, all if it telling us what we know..

Fine, then pick the dude in the 5th round, not the 3rd. Alas being compared to Coby Fleener means he should've been playing this year and at least contributing like Coby. Regardless, it's not always about measureables.

Honestly though, I hate when we bring various draftniks into the discussion. Everyone seems to love so-and-so when they support their argument about a player, but never when they don't.

He was on the field for seven snaps in the Buffalo game (last home game of the season). Although he wasn't targeted on any of the seven plays, he ran his routes correctly every time according to the coaches.
