Post Dolphins trying to lock up Reshad Jones
Quote:
The Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are currently trying to sign SS Reshad Jones to a contract extension.
Jones turns 25 in February and is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He emerged as a legit top-five safety in 2012, grading out third in Pro Football Focus' ratings behind only Eric Weddle and Jairus Byrd. Jones is a building block for Kevin Coyle's defense. We'd expect him to target a deal similar to that of Raiders SS Tyvon Branch, who inked a four-year, $26.6 million contract last offseason. Branch's deal contains $17.6 million guaranteed.

Always risky paying a guy after his breakout season.

Especially when he broke out because he finally decided to care.

He didn't care before? or was it that the previous regime was too blind to see that this kid should be starting? Pay the kid.

Jason Taylor's comments when he left:
Quote:
Taylor challenged Reshad Jones, a likely starter at safety. “You can’t play, ‘I’m the young card’ forever,” Taylor said. “You’re a pro. Now it’s time to eliminate mistakes and be a leader.”

That includes things like “paying attention in meetings,” he said.

Riskier to sign a player long-term after a bad season...

See, even JT knew this kid was gonna be a great player. Again, pay the kid. Pay him before he replicates the season he just had and takes the best offer from the highest bidder.

Maturity on Jones?

You completely missed my point lol.

Jones having the talent to be very good was visible to JT...This year he decided to mature and put the work in.

And you're going to pay him big, guaranteed, long term money after 1 year of doing it?

Like Dphins4me just said, maturity is a huge question mark.

I'd rather pay him more next year after proving further that he was worth it than pay him a little less now, but him revert back to what he was.

No , he didn't care. I can see signing him to a favorable contract but bringing the previous regime into it is reaching.

He's a great young player and if we wait a season he might be more expensive. I like that we're making this move now. I hope Ireland can get it done and at a fair price. Hopefully he can lock down all or most of our veteran free agents to good deals so that we can go into the draft completely focused and ready to continue building this roster.

Seems to me the kid stepped up.. Its not like he is a 5 year guy, or even a 3 year starter..

His rookie season he was # 2 behind Clemons, 2011 he was witched from FS to SS as Bell's backup, this year he was a starter replacing Bell.....

Seems like he is right where you want a player to be in his situation...

He decided to mature and put in the work and it wasn't a contract year.

If we don't extend him now, he'll probably continue his ascent on a contract year and make himself an even more expensive player.

Then our options will be to either pay him even more than we would have to now or let him become a free agent.

I'd rather extend him now because we'll get better value out of the deal than we will next offseason.

JP you don't seem to like any moves... I fear if you ran our team we'd have a lot of turnover... well more than we already do.

Kid is talented and we need to lock up the talent we have.

I would rather spend the extra few million next Off Season when I'm more sure of his future.

Remember Chris Johnson in Oakland? Really talented young corner...breaks out. Big contract...bust.

If Reshad had been a steady guy his 1st and 2nd year and broke out I'd say great. Lock him up....But to be a bum in years 1 and 2 and then suddenly turn it on for a season...I can't say I'm sold.

2011 12 starts, 67 comb, 49 total, 2 sacks, 1 INT
2012 16 starts, 95 comb, 74 total, 1 sack, 2 FF, 4 INT

If you break it down its pretty much identical stats outside of the obvious 4 picks this year....

Easy for you to say, it isn't your money and if you spend less on him now you have more money to fill the numerous holes this team has over the next couple of seasons.

And again, he becomes more expensive next season and hits the open market and then you lose a good player who you could have extended before he ever hit free agency.

Quote:

One example does not an argument make. There are plenty of other players who get extended and continue to improve.

Be a bum?

He was a 5th round draft choice... and actually the 32nd pick in the 5th round. Was he supposed to come in an play at a Pro Bowl level from day one? He is a guy who has always shown glimpses and the more he gets on the field the more plays he makes.

What is it in your thinking that made him a bum?

Regardless of where he was drafted, Reshad was consistently a liability in coverage the last 2 years.

I'm not going to go on a tantrum if we pay him...but it's a risk is all I'm saying.

Somebody like Hartline is different. We saw consistent improvement year to year. He then got more of an opportunity and broke out.

With Jones it was a complete 180. Regardless of what the tackle stats suggest, we all saw the turn around with our eyes.

There has to be somebody that agrees with me it's a huge risk?

It depends on what the "risk" is. He isn;t a top 15 safety IMO.

I think he's a top 10 safety.

Look, this team has a serious lack of playmakers. We only have 3 right now on defense, Wake, Starks and Jones. So how bout we keep him.

The good teams develop their draft picks.

I've never heard that Reshad Jones didn't care. Soliai was in that boat, but he seems to have grown up tremendously. I think you lock up your own players until you start to successfully bring up someone to replace them. Of course, that hasn't worked out so well for the Patriots secondary until this year. My guess is that Belichick would tell you to pay the man.

As Rich mentioned, I say you pay him the money now before he has back to back great seasons and can command even more in the market. The guy deserves a nice contract. Sign him and get on down the road.

There is nothing to disagree with here. His rookie season, he was a spot player and barely put up any numbers. Last season was his first starting and he produced more and now after one year of starting under his belt he broke out.

The more playing time he gets, the better he gets, just like Brian Hartline. And he hasn't been around as long as Hartline either.

He played last year out of necessity. He wasn't good.

I know Pro Football Focus draws mixed reviews, but they had Jones listed as the 84th Safety out of 87 in coverage in 2011. 57th ranked safety overall.

He stunk in coverage a year ago and we all saw it.

Number of snaps and number of tackles don't tell the story.

For the record, I think Jones will be a long term starter here. My point is just that to pay him like a top safety after 1 year of producing, following a very disappointing first 2 years in the league, is very risky. Too risky for my liking.

It seems he is steadily showing improvement from one year to the next.

Maybe he was playing out of position last year?
