Post Should we trade Jared Odrick?
Quote:
Odrick is a good run-stopper and has 11 sacks in 33 NFL games, which would be very good for a 3-4 DE. But the Dolphins no longer run the 3-4. They are primarily a 4-3 team and the requirements for the defensive end in that alignment are different. A 4-3 DE must be a pass-rusher because that scheme doesn't employ linebackers to be the primary pass rushers. The ends are the primary pass rushers. And while the 4-3 DE should be solid against the run, that is not how they make their big money.

So to recap: A 4-3 DE must be a fine pass-rusher and run-stopping comes second. A 3-4 DE must primarily be an excellent run-stopper and pass rushing is secondary.

Everything about Jared Odrick screams 3-4 DE.

And having him out there as a 4-3 DE tells me the Dolphins don't have a legit 4-3 DE as a starter opposite Cameron Wake.

personally I think Mando is smoking crack if he thinks we can get a 1st for him.
But I could possibly see Green Bay, Houston or San Fran giving us a low 2nd round pick.

If they can get a 1st or 2nd for him jump all over it.. But I dont see a team giving up either for a player that was drafted 28th overall and has not impressed anyone..

He is a 1.9 mil cap hit in 2013, and 2.0 in 2014. Not a big money player, could free up a little money to sign a DE in FA that can add to the pass rush without taking away from the run D.
But I would rather find a true pass rusher to have in rotation and keep Odrick for 1st down and run plays, bring in fresh legs for passing downs.

I think Odrick can play inside on passing downs, too. I'd keep him as he is flexible, but I would also continue to upgrade the pass rush. Also, he seems to be steadily improving.

I'm all for keeping Odrick, no question there. But a trade could be interesting..... I doubt a first rounder is in the card, and hence we'll get less value than he was originally drafted, especially for his average body of work. But try this on for size..... Odrick and a 2013 low #3 pick for Revis.... It would allieviate their cap space in NY, get us a premier CB, would give them an upgrade at DE over whomever was there...(Devito? Maybin?) and they would get a draft pick which would be beneficial to them seeing their cap room is smaller than a mouse hole. Now I am in no way saying we are to help a hated rival here...... but the acquisition of Revis for Odrick and a Marshall trade pick is almost worth it in my eyes........ there are probably a few other scenarios in a trade that might work out as well. Also, any movement of Odrick would mean the ABSOLUTE NECESSITY of resigning Starks and McDaniel

Isn't he a free agent after this season? Why would a team give up a high pick for him only to struggle with re-signing him next winter?

If Miami wants to re-sign Starks and McDaniel, and maybe add a short term FA (Freeney?) at DE while Vernon develops then I could see putting Odrick on the block. But he offers some good value and by all accounts brings a good attitude. Why get rid of that?

How about trading him for a OT? BTW, I think McDaniel is the one on the way out.

It's called Madden 25 this year :ann0y:

Didn't Odrick play 4-3 DT at Penn State? Why not just put him there...

In all seriousness, it all depends on how things go with Starks,..........if Starks walks then move Odrick to DT. If the Dolphins sign Starks, then entertain options to trade Odrick. Personally, I don't think Starks is worth a huge contract, especially since we have options with Odrick and McDaniel.

Why stop at Odrick and a 3rd for Revis?

Let's see if Odrick and a 2nd for the NFC Pro Bowl offense is doable.

The DL is the strength of the defense. Why are we talking about trading a solid, young DT/DE.

I think Randy Starks is worth a very good contract. He has been solid as a rock for Miami.

The logic is that the D is good but not great. If you want it to be great you need to get quality players who fit the scheme.

Personally I think there are bigger fish to fry

The defense needs a DE that can bring pressure on the opposite side of Cameron Wake along with some cornerbacks and perhaps a SS that can make plays.

Were does trading Jared Odrick or letting Randy Starks do anything but weaken the defense? Both are stout against the run and are both capable of getting pressure inside.

if somebody comes at us with a 2nd round pick for him I'd do it. He has not played like a 1st round pick IMO. He's a solid player but not a great fit here. We could get a starting corner with a 2nd round pick. Similar to the Davis trade, that's just smart football. The Patriots make smart trades all the time. Odrick is not going to make or break this already tough defense.
I was pissed that we traded back that year anyway. We should have stayed put and taken Earl Thomas. I knew that guy would be a stud.

Or Henne, Pat White, Eddie Moore, Daniel Thomas, Merling, Beck, Statete.....Our 2nd rd picks have been horrible. Why not move Odrick inside as a run stuffer?

cause we're already fine at tackle with Soliei, Starks and Kheeston Randall.

Is Starks a FA?

When I think of the 2010 draft, I think of trading up to have gotten Dez Bryant first and then not picking Koa Misi over Rob Gronkowski.

Odrick is not a star player in my book and someone Miami can do with or without, so if they are talking of trading him, I won't lose any sleep over it, that's for sure.

Yes, Randy is a FA. And while Odrick is not a "Star" player, he has been a solid player. DL/DT is one of those positions were you need depth. He can give you 5-6 sacks, which is strong coming from the interior of the defense.

Obviously some people want to trade him. I don't. Miami has more than enough picks and cap space to address what they need.

Why are we under the assumption a team is giving up a 2nd round pick for Odrick? When was the last time we saw someone pony up that much for a guy who isn't a borderline star?

Odrick is an important player for some team running a 34 defense. He has the rare 5-technique body and skill set that a Houston or Green Bay could use.

Finding the perfect guy for that spot ranks about 10thon the priority list IMO. Maybe 12th. I don't think I need to list them out.

Totally agree. I don't even understand trading our second best pass rusher. He's only played 2 full seasons as he was injured his rookie season. In hindsight the Dolphins should have stayed where they were and drafted Jason Pierre-Paul, but Odrick has been a reliable starter for us.

Me, too, which is why I was surprised that this thread has generated a lot of buzz here. I guess we all want another Cam Wake on the other side.

I agree that this isn't Miami's priority right now, but since this thread was started and IF, a big IF Miami were to net a 2nd rounder for Odrick, but KEEP Starks, I would consider the trade.

I do think Odrick could play Starks position though and even though the guy isn't a special player, he is as Dave says "solid".

I only consider it for the higher draft pick, but as swerve points out it would probably be a team specific need for someone to single out that kind of a trade with Miami.
