Miami plans to meet with Clemson speedster Jacoby Ford. Joe Fortenbaugh

The Miami Dolphins have been checking out a lot of wide receivers in preparation for April’s draft.

You can now add another name to the growing list.

Ford ran the fastest 40 at February's combine.

Clemson wideout Jacoby Ford has an upcoming workout scheduled with the Dolphins, according to a league source.

The 5’9”, 186-pound speed demon caught 56 passes for 779 yards and six touchdowns for the 9-5 Tigers in 2009. Ford finished his four-year career at Clemson with 143 receptions for 1,986 yards and 16 scores.

A vertical threat with the deep speed to run past the secondary, Ford turned in the fastest 40-yard-dash time at February’s combine when he ran a 4.28. However, the 22-year-old is a bit undersized and could struggle to beat press coverage at the next level against the NFL’s more physical cornerbacks.

In addition to Ford’s upcoming workout, the Fish have also shown interest in Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant, Notre Dame’s Golden Tate and Illinois’ Arrelious Benn, to name a few.

Miami’s first two picks include the 12th overall selection in the first round and the 11th selection (43 overall) in the second round.

That's what I like to see.

Imagine having both Spiller and Ford back there returning punts and kicks. You can't kick away from them unless you kick it out of bounds. On kicks that's huge, and punts it gives you an added 5 yards of better field position.

This is Ford's 2nd visit. I think he would make a very solid 3rd round selection. Reminds me of Percy Harvin. Sppedter with good quickness and he's physical/willing enough to make the tough catches over the middle and hang on.

I agree, Ford in the 3rd would be an awesome pick up. A track guy who can actually play football who would have thought?

He reminds me more of a Heyward-Bey than Percy Harvin. I'm not sold on Jacoby Ford, definitely not for a 3rd rounder as suggested before.

From Matt Waldman, "FootBall Guys .com"

"Jacoby Ford, Clemson: The Tigers wide receiver is a college champion in the 60 meters and ran a 2010 combine-best, 4.22-40. He’s a short, compact receiver who catches the ball with his hands and is capable of getting deep on any player in single coverage. Ford is also a dangerous return specialist. I was at first impressed with Ford during the initial practice of the Senior Bowl, but as the week progressed, he looked more like the player I saw in games: a small receiver that doesn’t know how to use his speed on the field. A receiver that catches the ball too close to his body, which can lead to drops when he has to make receptions in tight coverage or catch a
high-velocity pass. As fast as he is in a straight-line, his burst is average and he seems to lack a consistently effective first move to make a defender miss in the open field.

I believe Ford’s ball-carrying issues stem from a desire to avoid contact as much as possible. Have you ever watched a person try to disguise a motivation with an action that just doesn’t seem authentic? This is exactly how to describe Jacoby Ford with the ball in his hand when he is in the flat with a defender bearing down on him. He conveniently finds ways to make a move that forces him to run out of bounds and the first thing he does is make a frustrated gesture about going out of bounds. I don’t believe it’s an accident. It happens far too often and there are too many instances where he avoids contact that validate the idea that he’s simply putting on an act to avoid being labeled as soft. Ford will show flashes of his big play ability against a busted coverage or defensive back that makes a huge mistake in single coverage, but he’s primarily an underneath option whose greatest potential is as a return specialist."

I don't know, sounds like another Ginn.

Don't really know how he compares to DHB? Bey is more of a big fast, pure outside-near the sideline type guy. He is not going to make a catch in traffic, or over the middle at all, and he is a deep-routes-only type of guy.

Ford has a lot more versatility and physicallity. He will make the tough catch over the middle, can play in the slot as well as on the outside, and can return punts and kicks.

Ford is, quite frankly, a better version of Ginn. He may not have the route running of Ted, but he's got a better overall game.
