Re: Randy Starks is Franchise Tagged
Probably more like Tom Brady taking less to stay with the Patriots. I am with the Dolphins giving Starks a fair contract for the long haul. He is one of the few good things that Parcells did when he came to Miami. Quote: Starks willing to give Dolphins a discount
Free agent DT Randy Starks says he'd be willing to give the Dolphins a discount on a long-term deal.
"I want to be a Dolphin!!! Not just for one more year...," tweeted Starks. "Discount yea clearance rack heck no! I want to be here and finish here!" Starks seems opposed to the franchise tag, but word is that he's likely to get it by Monday's 4PM ET deadline. That doesn't mean a long-term deal can't be worked out by the July 15 deadline if he indeed does get tagged at the $8.45 million price. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/51027817/ ... ayer_news/

Miami reporters are questioning the validity of this rumor.

Quote: BenVolinPBP There is a rumor that #Dolphins have already placed the franchise tag on Randy Starks, but I don't believe that is correct as of right now https://twitter.com/intent/user?screen_name=BenVolinPBP

Quote: By Omar Kelly South Florida Sun Sentinel
3:55 p.m. EST, March 3, 2013
The Miami Dolphins have only used the franchise tag once during Jeff Ireland’s five-year tenure as the team’s General Manager, but the franchise must decide on Monday if they will use it on one of the team’s many free agents.
The last day NFL teams can apply the tag is March 4 by the league’s 4 p.m. deadline, and so far the Dolphins have only used threats of the tag as leverage during negotiations. Placing the franchise tag on one of the team’s free agents would drastically reduce the team’s $45 million in cap space, which will be spent to sign free agents, re-signing their own, and paying for the rookie class.

Re: Randy Starks is Franchise Tagged
I guess Starks was just tagged per Schefter, La Canfora and Kelly.
I don't if this move says more about Starks' importance or Miami's lack of faith in Odrick to replace him (maybe a little of both).
I wonder how this effects the DE position

Re: Randy Starks is Franchise Tagged
The Sun Sentinel is confirming he has been tagged. The Miami Dolphins have placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Randy Starks, guaranteeing the two-time Pro Bowl selection a one-year salary of $8.45 million in 2013. Using the franchise tag on Starks ensures that Miami’s defensive line, which has been the strength of the team since 2009, remains intact one more season because all four starters will be returning. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miam ... 9811.story

I guess the question now is.............do we trade Odrick? Personally, I like Odrick, but he's been playing out of position. He was the 28th overall pick in 2010 and a lot of teams would like to get him. A mid 2nd Rd pick seems reasonable.

His five sacks and ability to set the edge against the run are valuable. He is another big body you can rotate on the line to keep guys fresh. He can play end and tackle and provides depth. He also counts only about $2 million against the cap. And I doubt he gets us a 2nd round pick. If he did, then you'd have to consider it but you better have someone to take his place.

The talk of trading Odrick boggles my mind. The Dolphins are going to probably lose Tony McDaniel, so why trade Odrick. Plus, the Dolphins have 9 picks, so they should be able to load up in the draft.

Re: Randy Starks is Franchise Tagged
It's a very poor draft for 5-technique defensive ends so it is possible some team would offer a top 75 pick for Odrick. New Orleans? Green Bay? San Fran?
