Post Report: Dolphins have no competition for Mike Wallace
Quote:
...

Sports Illustrated's Peter King reported Monday morning that the Dolphins "didn't have much, if any, competition for a big-money deal" for Wallace during the start of the NFL's free agent negotiating period.

Big money in this case is around the $11 million per season, Dwayne Bowe/Vincent Jackson type-deals.

...

However, King's story indicates no team is willing to make the kind of financial investment in Wallace that the Dolphins are prepared to make.

Miami put its "Plan A" into motion last week when it re-signed Brian Hartline. ...

We all need to keep some perspective here. If Mike Wallace is signed for 12 million per season it is to make the rest of the offense better, not have him be a 100+ catch per season work horse.

Miami needs immediate production and doesn't have an internal option or the patience to wait on a draft pick to be that take the top off the defense factor. That is why they seem to be willing to go beyond anyone else's offer.

You'll see a heck of a lot more passing attempts but it will be spread between Wallace, Hartline, Bess and whichever TE they sign. I think Bess will lose a lot of targets this year.

jammer, I wouldn't be surprised if they draft Tavon Austin in the 2nd round if he is available. Bess is in the last year of his deal and while we love his effort and production, he could certainly be upgraded.

If the goal is to add speed, then watch them go with Wallace and then take Austin if available... then trade Bess.

I'd be shocked if Austin is still there in the 2nd round but I'd be less shocked if Ireland makes a move back into the 1st round to grab him should they pass at 12. I still think Miami takes him at 12.

Bess would certainly be in demand on the trade market. I agree, his efforts have been great but Ireland probably has a vision of Wallace, Hartline, Cook and Austin giving defensive coordinators fits. Plus, Binns and Matthews probably make for nice, developmental 4th and 5th options.

I could see the Rams or Texans having serious interest in Bess.

I don't see Austin at 12. If we sign Wallace and a tight end, I see either a pass rusher, cornerback or offensive tackle, depending on what need we don't address in free agency.

If it comes down to money then there is no way he goes to the pats. They don't believe in dropping huge money wide receivers.

I've seen a lot of mocks having Miami take Xavier Rhodes so you may be correct.

I'd also be fine with them taking Jonathan Cooper as a pulling guard if he is BPA because it could create some big play opportunity for Miller. I can hear the collective fan base groan already if they take another linemen.

If Wallace is signed, it's hard to see us taking a WR in the first round. I got to think we'll be targeting CB or O-line. I'm hoping teams drafting before us will reach for players like Geno Smith, Matt Barkely and Cordarrelle Patterson. That will leave some excellent options for us.

The likelihood Dee Millliner (CB, Alabama) drops to 12 is a stretch, but if he's not taken by the Eagles or Lions, then odds drastically improve. If not, keep your fingers crossed for OT Lane Johnson, (OT, Oklahoma).

They paid Welker over 9 million last year..For a couple million more they get Wallace...

That is not out of the question....The could afford that. The TE's are the highest paid in the league..Brandon Lloyd is paid and may be cut if they go with a Wallace.

If Milliner drops into that 7-8 range, I think we'd be wise to move up and get him. Use some of that extra quantity we have in the draft to upgrade the quality.

The Bills are the real wild card in this draft. They can go anywhere, QB, WR, DE or CB. So the logical trade is with the Cardinals at the 7 spot. That's an interesting decision, first what will it cost and how much interest do you think Teams like the Panthers will have in trading with the Bills or Jets to get him.

Vikings just traded Harvin to Seattle.

So much for no Wallace competition.

Also keep in mind Vikings need multiple receiver targets. Going after Wallace might be the move or maybe they get Jennings (alpha target) and Welker (replace Harvin in the slot).

Definitely makes Tavon Austin an interesting draft option for the Vikes too.

Moving Harvin only saves them just under $2.8 million in cap space. Not a huge amount. The Vikings will be about $18 million under the cap with this move. Factoring in about $5 million for rookies, that puts them in a tight spot if they sign Wallace.

It could be argued their QB situation would also be a deterrent for him.

I agree with those saying he is going where the most guaranteed money is.

It's Rick Spielman versus Jeff Ireland now.

Some would call it the Loser Bowl...

The Palm Beach Post hears from "someone (it) trusts" that free agent Mike Wallace to Miami is a "done deal."
ESPN, Sports Illustrated and USA Today have all insinuated as such over the past 24 hours, making the evidence that Wallace is planning to take his talents to South Beach overwhelming. Wallace's rep could drag talks out on Tuesday for the sake of squeezing a few extra dimes out of an obviously desperate team, but it doesn't appear anyone else has near the desire level to get a deal done.

Yeah man, thank God we got Manning last offseason so Wallace should tear it up this year...

Not getting Wallace would be disappointing...but its not the end of the world.

There is however going to be a freak out of epic proportions if Miami doesn't get him.

Yes, just like last season when we didn't get Matt Flynn.

I actually wouldn't freak if we didn't nail him. I'd be more if we didn't upgrade TE. The moment you upgrade that. Your current WRs start looking a lot better. And FYI.. I HATE having to shell out this kind of money for a burner. Though it might be necessary. So I'm sort of indifferent. So long as decent strides are made to improve our offenses production.

I was happy about that. Great non move by Ireland. Heck, come to think of it, Ireland has made his best moves by not moving on some of those quarterbacks (Orton, etc).

Minnesota could enter the picture now that they have traded Percy Harvin. It going to have to be substantially more than what Miami has offered due to taxes in Minnesota, so we will see what the Vikings do.

Greg Jennings is an option also for the Vikings.

Wallace strikes me as a guy who wants to get paid more so than a chance for a ring. We will sign him because of that. Still , holding true to my opinion of be careful for what you wish for.

I think Mike Wallacecould really open up the offense, but I get a bad feeling about signing a guy to a huge contract when no one else is willing to pay him that much. Just doesn't sound like a good idea. I'm sure Ireland will get trash talked either way.

That whole '1 trick pony' thing is a bit inaccurate about Wallace and it minimizes him as a receiver.
Was just watching a free agency special with Polian, Parcells and Hasselback and they all raved about Wallace and they agreed he's the only free agent worth the big payday. They said that he's more than just a deep threat.

why? he produces. And makes everyone else around him better. More so than Brandon Marshall does.
