I am not familiar with this guy, would he be a big upgrade? What's his age?

From what I understand, the Ravens were trying hard to keep him as Ray Lewis' replacement.

Very surprising move.

It's the reason they traded Boldin....

Media is in shock right now at this move.

Dansby is on the way out.

Where's your source? I don't see it on either PFT or Rotoworld.. The latter usually has the first news on most updates

I agree this would be strange but kind of awesome too

92 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles for the Ravens last season. 6'1 240 lbs, runs a 4.6 40.

More likely Burnett based on the cap savings versus dead cap.

Cutting Dansby would open up $3.9 mil. Cutting Burnett would open up $3.2 mil. But the dead cap for Dansby would be $4.6 mil, Burnett would be $2.5 mil.

I think Burnett will be gone.

This guy can play either position.

Heck... it might be Koa Misi.

Think about it ...

Long, gone.
Bush, gone.

Dansby was a part of that player council whom anyone with eyes could've seen Philbin was just "tolerating". Alas, as hard-nosed and tough of a player Los has been, he hasn't produced the big plays (turnovers/sacks).

Wonder if he gets cut or traded.

I'm hoping this signing is to replace Misi and we go another year before moving somebody.

espn is saying the same on NFL32, though they mentioned the contract has not been officially signed as of yet.

Or they could keep all 3 for a year, and rid of Dansby next year.

Burnett is coming off a GOOD season. Can't see him being cut. But that's speculation on my part.

Hard to call. Misi had 3.5 sacks, Burnet had 109 tackles and 2.5 sacks, Dansby had 134 tackles and 1 sack...

They all produced.

But Ellerbe is faster and can cover tight ends and backs... tough to call right now.

Deal is reported at 5 years, $35 million. Someone is definitely gone.

I'm surprised they did it only because that wasn't really an area of weakness.
But that was the expected range for him.

Dansby got 5 years $43 million.

The more I think about it, the more I think he is a goner. He certainly stepped out of line a couple of times when he didn't agree with a Philbin decision.

Man my nightmare may come true after all this crap, we better not end up in cap hell because you can kiss contention good bye and say hello to mediocrity and below for the next decade. Someone please tell me this Ellerbee guy is worth the darn cap. I'm really concerned right now lol. There is now way I am overhyping myself until I see game proof.

Yup. Called out the organization twice this year. They remember it.

I just don't know that Ellerbe has the speed to play MLB in a 43. We'll see though.

He ran a 4.6 40.

Karlos has been solid, but he has not been the playmaker the Dolphins thought he would be. Philbin is not the guy to want to have players speaking out in the media.

As far as Ellerbe having the speed to play the position, I think he will be fine. The Ravens wanted him badly.

We gotta do something if we're gonna cover Gronk & Hernandez twice a year.

This is a nice surprise for us. I hope we could trade Dansby, & not merely cut him.

This from NFLDraftIndiser (NFLDraftBites)

NFL_Draft_Insider ‏@NFLDraftBites

Next Offseason #Dolphins can cut LB Karlos Dansby w/ 9.25 M of Cap Savings & 2.325 M of Dead Money. Ellerbe signing indicates that direction

Cap hell is for a year or two. Not a decade.

Heck, how bad is the cap hell the Redskins are in right now?

Or they can just cut or trade him now and save $3.9 mil. Also, when are they going to do something about Dimitri Patterson's $4.6 million cap number?

There are contracts coming off the books in the next year or two that will help offset these new escalating contracts. Karlos Dansby, Paul Soliai just to name a couple.

I dont care about the cap or what happens in 3 or 5 years... I have been waiting for 3 or 5 years to come for a long time...

Sign the players who give us the best chance to win... Balto fans may be mad now that good players are gane, but they sure didnt seem to care about the impending cap nightmare back in Feb......

Remember guys, we can ROLL OVER remaining cap space to next season. That may be a reason why contracts take up so little cap space in year one.

Tame your excitement people.

Yeah right! Been waiting for these good moves by Ireland. I am darn excited about this and if Miami happens to also land Cook or Keller at tight end, this will really potentially be a great free agency for the fins.

They need missing links to make this team better and that is what Ireland is doing.

As a Phins fan, how can you not get excited? Unless maybe you are a closet Pats fan...

This is oddly similar of when Miami got the best ILB and WR on the market 3 years ago.

Three years later, they're both done (likely).

I liked the Dansby back then, but I was VERY skeptical about B. Marsh and I never thought of him as a speedster. I'm excited and so are others, who cares? Talk to me in 2 years then...lol

the writing was on the wall when Dansby bad mouthed the front office.
Would have liked to keep Burnett though.

Think of it as... you have a car, the warranty is about to expire and you know you'll be spending big money for repairs once it does, not to mention the car will not function the same way.

So why not trade it in now for someone newer and save on your monthly payments in the process, rather than waiting for it to break down and cost you more money?

The way I gauge how great this signing was, is by how angry Ravens fans are that he is gone.

Go Dolphins!

Funny post from a Ravens message board:

"Well if it turns out that Ellerbe walks then I want Phillip Wheeler."

Hahahahaha!

I think about this Ravens fan every time I see a recap of who the Dolphins have signed. Lol!

21.425 guaranteed for Ellerbe....That's an absurd amount.

That's not what rotoworld says.

3/12/2013: Signed a five-year, $34.75 million contract. The deal contains $14 million guaranteed -- a $7 million signing bonus and each of Ellerbe's first two base salaries. Ellerbe is eligible for annual $25,000 workout bonuses throughout the contract's life. 2013: $1 million, 2014: $6 million, 2015-2017: Under Contract, 2018: Free Agent
