There was a sense of optimism Thursday that Gibson will end up with the Dolphins. He is said to be excited about joining Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Davone Bess in what would be a potent offense.

Gibson arrived from New York on Thursday after meeting with the Jets, his first stop on his free agency tour. He is also scheduled to interview with the Titans, but that would be canceled if all goes well in South Florida.

We could definitely spread defenses out. I'd still want to add a 2nd speed guy (Tavon Austin), especially with Bess being in the last year of his deal.

He's as big as Bess... and significantly faster....

Davone had 2 inches, 20 pounds on him coming out of Hawaii. Much thicker now.

If they land Gibson, I think it's to replace Bess in 2013. And it'll be a ridiculously stupid move.

I don't think stupid. He's a much better red zone target. Fits the West Coast better. Similar player to James Jones.

Conspiracy Theory of the Day:

I'm not advocating or expecting this, just connecting a few dots. Miami tried to see if they could get Keller at 1 year for probably less than Finley is getting in GB, he passed. Miami sees an opportunity to bring in a bigger guy for 3 WR sets. Jennings may be on the verge of signing in Minnesota. Bess costs less than Finley.

Suppose Miami signs Gibson and ships Bess and a late pick to GB for Finley. They get the 1 year trial contract they offered to Keller, GB saves a few million in cap room to make a move or two.

It just doesn't make sense that they would let Keller get away, bring in Gibson, and settle for a rookie to compete with Clay, Egnew and Miller.

Something has to be up.

IF Miami evens goes after Tavon Austin that could spell the end for Bess and if there is a college player coming out that I could feel good about unseating Davone, it is this kid. He is Sean Jackson fast and gets open ALOT and what he does in open space is amazing with all his lightning quick knee buckling moves.

PR. Don't get me wrong, I like Bess and he has been dependable, but Austin is a GAME CHANGER.

Creates nightmares for the secondary big time and if he were to line up with Wallace, Hartline and Gibson, our receiving corp would be right up their behind Denver's as one of the leagues elite.

Some of the Miami reporters have been saying that Philbin is purging the vocal leaders who gave him some guff last year. Bush, Long, Bess and Dansby were that group.

Come week one I want our receiver core to be:

Mike Wallace
Brian Hartline
Brandon Gibson
Deandre Hopkins
Davone Bess

That's a pretty sweet fleet of weapons and gives you a good chance to score 20 to 24 points each week.

So in this scenario, Davone Bess is your #5 WR?

Sorry, but c'mon man....Let's at least be realistic.

the order's not set in stone, there is no number 1, 2, 3 receiver in Philbin's offense.
But I'm not as high on Bess as you appear to be.

Bess is a very good receiver. He was asked to do things last year that he shouldn't be doing, like run deep routes. You have Wallace, Hartline and a decent TE and that field will open up for him to get some serious YAC opportunity.

I'm just not sure he is in Miami's 2013 plans.

I agree with all of that. I said last year that I don't see Bess being here much longer now that Philbin is searching for his type of receivers. Bess is good but we can do better.

PFF has Brandon Gibson ranked 23rd from a receiving perspective (Bess ranked 43rd). Bess graded out better as a blocker, though (37th versus 52nd).

Overall, Bess graded out as 38th best, Gibson as 39th best.

Hartline edged them both out. Ranked 37th.

Both Hartline and Gibson had 5 drops in 2012. Bess had 8.

Heard the same thing, however when it was discussed by the pros they pointed out that Dansby was asked to restructure he turned it down, and Jake Long is wanted back but the Dolphins just have a salary they are sticking with..

When coaches dont want players they are gone, Welker got on BB's bad side and is now a Bronco and the all knowing all powerful genius is under scrutiny for making a bad move....

I think the loss of Bush and Fasano are purely scematic, meaning they did not fit the direction the offense is going. Fasano was gone regardless with KC putting that contract on him, and I cant blame him.

The only one I thought who had a vocal problem was Dansby. He was had a lot to say about Chad Johnson being cut. Philbin tried to pull him to the side and tell him that its ok to not like certain decisions, but he would prefer to keep in in-house, and out of the media. (That is the way the pats do it, and I respect that.) He promptly spoke up again to the media, advertising his displeasure even after talking to Philbin. I bet they tried trading him back then.

I think the only thing Philbin wants, is to stay out of the media. I bet he HATED Hard Knocks. I agree with him, even though I watched every second of it, lol.

Bess is nearly 3 inches taller, there is no doubting how ridiculously small Austin is. While his physical traits leave much to be desired, I do think he could succeed in a secondary role with that 4.27 speed. Incredible.

I'd prefer we not waste our time with Gibson and draft some real talent if we want another wideout.

What about Heyward-Bey? While the kid hasn't developed much in the way of a route runner, who better to teach him than guys like Hartline and Bess? Heyward-Bey and Wallace on the outside would give teams absolute nightmares. Talk about opening up the run game and stretching the defense! Wallace and Heyward-Bey would take two corners and two safeties 30 to 40 yards down the field on every play. That means a big time advantage for someone like Miller. If he comes through the hole clean or gets the edge he's going to have a lot of open space.

The Miami Herald considers Davone Bess' roster spot "at risk" after the additions of Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson.
We haven't seen Gibson's contract terms yet, but Bess is looking like a No. 4 receiver and his $2.63 million base salary is pricey for one of those. It's worth noting that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin often used four receivers as offensive coordinator in Green Bay. It's not out of the question that Miami keeps all four of Wallace, Brian Hartline, Gibson, and Bess on the 53-man roster.

James Jones, Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, Randall Cobb and Jermichael Finley ll at some point through the Aaron Rodgers tenure has looked like a superstar so the wr numbers dont matter they can have 4 but the Tayvon Austin visit already makes me say hmmm Bess is in trouble maybe we trade him?

Gibson is at least worth a spot in camp. With more free agency, and the draft still to come, who know how it will all shake out, but I would rather have more options than less. You never know who will shine and who will falter.
