It's about time. I think that perhaps this coaching staff is making him realize that the NFL stands for Not For Long if you come into camp out of shape and take a long time to get back into shape. He had a rough camp last year. Maybe he's not looking forward to that again.

Report: John Jerry reports in shape

The Palm Beach Post reports Dolphins RG John Jerry reported to voluntary workouts "looking really good, almost where he needs to be" with his weight.

"Apparently the light has come on," were the words of a source. It might still be too little, too late for the long out-of-shape guard after the Dolphins signed Lance Louis. Reporter Ben Volin believes Jerry's roster spot is "very much in danger." Jerry is a trade candidate heading into the final year of his rookie contract. He played more offensive snaps than any Dolphin in 2012.

I wasn't aware that he played the most snaps on the team. At least he seems good from a durability stand point. I just want this darn offensive line solved so we can focus on some more skill position players.

He gets a lot more bad press than he deserves....

Maybe, he graded out 49th out of 81 guards according to PFF. That means he is average, or was average his first year in a zone scheme despite being out of shape.

Getting in good shape and playing another year in the scheme can only help him.

Jerry was a decent pass blocker, allowing only 2 sacks, but 15 hurries.

His run blocking left a lot to be desired...

I think Lance Louis will be the end of John Jerry if he's healthy. He's more athletic and simply a better fit for what we're trying to run. While I've always been a fan of Jerry's upside if he ever got into shape. This year would have to be a true break out season for him if he's going to keep his job.

You know, I feel like I'm missing out on a lot not having access to the PFF numbers on all these guys. That being said, if that's how he graded taking all that time to get into shape, then I can only assume that coming into camp in shape and having another year under his belt will improve those numbers by quite a bit. He's a big guy, he's never going to be the quick, athletic lineman you usually see in a zone scheme, but I still think he's got a lot of potential

Any chance Miami would move John Jerry to RT?

John Jerry made his first career start at left tackle in Week 15, with Jake Long battling a back injury.
It wasn't much of a test against a Bills defense lacking a pass rush, but the coaching staff was impressed that Jerry "competed" nonetheless. The 2010 third-rounder has recovered nicely since a training camp that was described as a "bitter, bitter disappointment."

Improving John Jerry practices at first-team left tackle for Miami Dolphins
December 14, 2011|By Omar Kelly, Sun Sentinel

Every day after practice John Jerry spends an extra 15-30 minutes working on his footwork and technique with Tony Sparano Jr.

...

Now, with Jake Long sidelined by a back injury he suffered against Oakland, the Dolphins have Jerry working as the team’s first-team left tackle.

No need to panic for two reasons. Jerry has improved, and it’s JUST PRACTICE.

Let's not go crazy here. Buffalo was a bad defensive front seven with a league-worst pass rush. This isn't to discount the work Jerry did replacing Jake Long. Reggie Bush rushed for 203 yards. The line dominated. But it's a quantum leap to go from there to the idea Jerry is the answer at a position he now has played one game at since high school.

I've been asking myself the very same question lately. Jerry played his junior and senior season at right tackle at Ole Miss. He was quite good from what I remember. The only knock was his discipline with his weight. He was selected in the 3rd round because the guy is an impressive athlete. But he wasn't selected earlier because of his weight concerns.

From what I remember he actually played pretty well at tackle in the few games he was asked to do so in 2011. At 6'5" and 328lbs (in game shape) or a little less he's a pretty good size for a right tackle. Also, his pass protection has always been better than his run blocking. But if the guy shows up at 345, no way.

I hope we let Dallas Thomas take over the left guard spot. Move Incognito over to right guard. Then let Jerry and Gardner compete for the right tackle job. Honestly, I think Jerry would win the job.
