Maybe that was the ploy, get one more suitor out of the way to target one of the top 3 OTs in the draft. Based on what Kelly is saying there are a lot of teams willing to trade down and if it is a buyer's market you can reach a deal for peanuts compared to previous years.

It would be excellent if the Chargers traded for Albert, and Johnson fell to Miami at 12. We'd get our left tackle, save money, and keep all of our picks. While Albert is a good player, and an excellent fit, we're still better off taking Johnson on draft day if he's there.

If the Dolphins can find a way to draft Johnson in the 1st, trade Bess for a future mid round pick, draft Swope with a mid round pick, trade Carpenter for a future late round pick, and draft a kicker to replace him this year, they'd be very well set up financially, and probably wouldn't see a drop off in talent.

you're not getting value for a Kicker... Carpenter would be cut.

I'd really like that scenario.

First a third for Bess, now ANYTHING for a kicker?

C'mon man...

I don't think Johnson falls to Miami, but the 11th pick is more attractive than the 12th, hence Miami isn't having to compete with SD in a bidding war to move up.

He's a former Pro Bowler and he's in the middle of his career. I'm just suggesting we try to trade him for a 7th. But if we can't get anything, we just cut him. Either way. We've already got two 7th round picks to draft a replacement.
I still maintain that Bess is worth a 3rd or 4th round pick. He's a quality receiver and a proven commodity. I think a 70 catch / 700 yard slot receiver is worth that.

If Al Davis was still alive or Matt Millen still a GM you might have a shot of trading Carpenter. No one is trading for a kicker these days, especially when you've had rookie kickers perform well recently.

Carpenter isn't going anywhere this year. If he struggles again, he will be gone. I've said it before, everyone has a down year. Overall, Carp has been solid for us, and he is young yet.

I have not seen anything else about the Chargers looking to get in on Branden Albert AT ALL. As you said jam, this seems to be a ploy.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rappoport, Miami is willing to pay him too

The Saints gave us a 6th for Mare. Why couldn't we get a 7th for Carpenter? It's not completely out of the question to get a late round draft pick for a good kicker who we want to replace for financial reasons.

It's not out of the question, but I'd be pretty surprised to see it happen. I don't think the organization is as unhappy with Carpenter as a lot of us fans are

I think the fans are overreacting. One off year does not kill a guys career. Not even a kicker.
Actually, ESPECIALLY a kicker. Finding decent kickers is tough.
